Do you have any recommendation on articles or resources for gay parents?

Asked by wsxwh111 (2464points) October 11th, 2014

I’m a 21-year-old gay in China. Came out to my parents about half a year ago, their reaction wasn’t bad, they claimed they’ve accepted the fact that I’m gay and said I could live the life I want, but they know little about gay, and they know little about how I feel. For example, they totally can’t understand why I want to tell some of my friends.
They cares about me a lot, I can tell that, I care a lot about them, too, but sometimes it just feels like they can’t get me.
Do you guys have some resources, articles, movies, etc., that can help parents understand the gay things and their gay children?
Thanks a lot for your attention!

Here is a research guide I developed for LGBT students. You will find some web sites and book titles that are relevant to your question.

@BeenThereSaidThat I think the OP is “so obsessed” because he is in the ;process of coming out in China. Try walking a mile in his shoes.

@janbb I doubt if he even reads all his answers. I think there is much more going on with him. good luck trying to get through.

You may be right.

If they don’t understand, they may never understand. If they don’t want to understand, they will never understand. You can’t cram some idea or concept down another person’s throat if they don’t want to swallow it. Leave them alone. Maybe they’ll come around. Just don’t get your hopes up.

@BeenThereSaidThat I’m so sorry, maybe it’s my failing to reply in time that is so unpolite, but I do read all the answers you gave me carefully.
It’s sooo nice that in this website, so many fantastic people read my questions and gave me so many great advices. The answers are always better than I ever dreamed and help really a lot.
I’m actually a little stressed and anxious, recently I have to try my best to be tough and strong, while explaining basic knowledge about LGBT people to my parents and managing my study and GPA and my research. I’m in my last year in unicersity and is applying for New York University for a master degree.
I guess this is just a tough time and I have the faith to make it, with your totally generous help. For many times the answers just gave me a lot of hope and encouragement. Thank @janbb ,Thank you all, really.
