Why won't firefox open?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) October 17th, 2014

When I went to use the computer it had restarted during the night. There was a message that some updates had failed. I ignored that and tried to open Firefox. Got this error message

I ran malware and also ran up dates. I also restored my computer to the 14th. I’m still getting that error message.

I think I have Windows XP, but I’m not sure how to find out for sure. Used to be I could right click on the desk top and find out, but apparently I can’t do that any more.

Did you re-start your PC?

Then I’m done, @Dutchess_III.

You can open your control panel and click on system to see if you’re XP or not, if that helps at all.

Are you using IE?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Hell no I’m not using IE! Chrome right now.

You would think I could find my system info there, but I can’t.

Easiest fix is to simply re-download (with IE (yuck)) and reinstall firefox. it’s a .dll that’s either corrupted or missing.

I was going to suggest that, @ARE_you_kidding_me, but I was hoping there was a better fix that would retain any Firefox customization.

Well, I have Carbonite so it’s possible I can find my book marks there.

Good news. I’m on Firefox now..and all my bookmarks made it here with me!

@Dutchess_III Relieved to hear that Firefox is finally working for you. I have never heard of a file with that name, which leaves me wondering if you could have either a virus or a piece of malware lurking on your system. (Of course, I also found both Win XP and Win 7 to be flat out cranky and uncooperative at times.)

That’s why I ran Malware.

It’s a legit file, part of Firefox.
