Random dolls and toys, small objects around the house like toothpicks… They were necessary tools for my “movie studio”. It was the early inspiration for my interest in story-telling.

A pencil, an eraser and a lot of notebook. It was the inspiration for my wish to tell stories in the form of pictures and words.

Almost. When I was very young I loved a little hotel toy I had. It was like a small dollhouse, but it was a hotel, with a revolving door at the front. I went to Michigan State University for school, because it had a really good Hospitality school, but in the end I didn’t major in Hospitality. I still like the idea of the Hospitality business.

As a kid I also loved the ballerinas that spun around and music played. I still love ballet class and watching the ballet.

Laughs, you made me think and smile. I’ve always had an insatiable need for speed. Everything I did as a kid was orientated to going fast. Big Wheels, bikes, snowmobiles, then cars. Still do it. Last weekend on St Rte 28 in Delaware county my s/o told me take it easy Mario as I was whipping through those curves. Fun. :)

I used to write programs and games in Basic when I was a kid. Now I do this for a living.

Most definitely books.

I will admit, and sadly so, that Barbie had her perfectly manicured fingers wrapped around my early self. I relished her sense of style; I coveted her pink Jaguar; the gonadless Ken was a hunk; her friend Midge was cute as could be; and oh that hair—that perfect bouffant. She took me down the wrong road on more than one occasion, and I’ve locked her in my closet for 50 years as punishment.

@Adirondackwannabe You made me think about how my husband loved Speed Racer as a kid and had bunches of toy cars. Right now we are driving to Daytona for his race.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@JLeslie I’m jealous. :) You told me but I forgot what class he races in.

Model horses that set the stage for my horse crazy escapades that are still going on. However, I am almost 55 and I really wracked myself up a couple weeks ago rodeoing around on a very fast horse. I still feel like I am 19 inside but fuck, my back, my back. Time to hang up my spurs and just mosey along the trail at a fast walk. haha

Trash!

My sister and I would make stuff from all kinds of odds and ends. Dioramas made with little plastic characters cut out from Otter Pop wrappers. Rings from Handi-Snack red plastic spreaders. We even used to do a ghetto version of gold silver leafing by separating the foil from gum wrappers!

It’s turned out both good and bad. On one hand, I’m pretty creative. On the other hand, I have a hard time throwing anything away.

Everything has potential!

Today we made a stuffed bear using leftover fabric and stuffing from these stick horses. Tulle from a tulle wreath I made for her two years ago. And ribbon from her party favors, also from two years ago.

My stuffed bear, Fatso. I’ve had him for 24 years and I used to take him everywhere with me; sleepovers, surgeries, road trips, etc. I also fed him, as the brown stain on his muzzle indicates. I think, in a weird way, he reinforced my kindness for all living things. I mean, he was just a stuffed bear, but I treated him like he was alive. There are still moments when I will get him and hug him for quite a while because I’m having a really, really hard time with things. I have no doubt in my mind that I will cry if he ever disintegrates or tears beyond repair. I have no shame.

I am not exactly an adult yet, but my doctor kit did inspire me to become a doctor.

Books, forcing me to question actions, thoughts of characters, why would they do the things they do, why did the author write them to do the things they do, etc. I then turned that towards life and real people which created a strong interest in philosophy, psychology, and the occasional book writing.

Also Legos, love building and destroying stuff which inspired a hobby in sculpting and woodwork and the occasional hovercraft/cannon/shoe rack… That last one brings me no joy.

fluthernutter's avatar

Curiosity piqued! Tel me more about this hovercraft/cannon/shoe rack! So long as it doesn’t bring up too much pain, of course.

Winter_Pariah's avatar

It was a hovercraft with a potato cannon attached and some of wind flow generated from the turbines could be directed into building up the necessary psi to fire the potato cannon (once swapped out the potato cannon for a set of automatic air soft guns but that’s a different story). When I was away to college, my mother had my father dismantle the hovercraft and when I got back home, I – in ignorance of what had happened – made my mother a shoe rack upon her request. It wasn’t til a couple days later that I realized that a good portion of the hovercraft had just gone into making that shoe rack. I’m so glad that when we moved a bunch of her shoes went missing.

Hahaha! Wish I could give you way more lurve for that story!
