Do I have the beginnings of dementia?

Asked by talljasperman (21916points) October 27th, 2014

I am forgetting mathematics and common words and peoples names and phone numbers I used to call my mom to find out my landlines phone number. Every time I enter my password I have to click on “forgot your password” every time. I also am forgetting questions that I asked on Fluther. I still get enjoyment from dungeons and dragons and I miss playing with others. I will have to accept that I have peeked and I won’t be accomplish any thing other than contributing to Fluther. I am going for walks and bus rides and grocery shopping.
Edit my monthly needle is coming due in the 29th for mental health so I am going to be fine… so please don’t judge me for legitimately being curious about the super natural and weird and wonderful. I have a doctor and will be getting a ct scan on the 30th. I still would like to know if I have early onset dementia. Or if my medications are giving side effects. PM me and I will list them for you.

More like terrible anxiety/depression. Try to get the right dose of vitamin B complex.

If you can ask that question, then you don’t have Dementia.
Although stress is a big factor .
Especially worrying about Dementia too.
Once everything in your life settles down for you so will your stress and worries.

@Inspired_2write “If you can ask that question, then you don’t have Dementia”.

I don’t think that is necessarily true. My mom has dementia and we saw it come on gradually, getting worse and worse over time. She knew she had a problem in the beginning and for several years afterward. Even now she has moments of lucidity when she is aware that there is much she knew that she can no longer remember.

In fact, for several years we were convinced that Dementia was worse than Alzheimer’s because people with Alzheimer’s don’t seem to know that they don’t know whereas folks with Dementia are, many times, well aware that their mind is slipping away.

FYI… We’re all suffering from the early signs of dementia. It starts the day we’re born.

So yes, yes you are my friend. I suggest getting out and enjoying life while you still can. Did you ever take that walk? Amazing how a regular routine of walking and proper diet can slow down the dementia dragon that’s chasing us.

It can most certainly be side effects of meds. Most especially if they are psych meds. I am having troubling memory problems. They are probably med side effects. Three of the meds I take can do that (Neurontin, Mirapex and Ativan). It’s scary for me though as my mother has Alzheimers and my grandmother also had it. I will be talking to my psychiatrist next month about it when I see him.

I think it’s great that you’ll be talking to you doctor about your concerns.

I have trouble remembering things when I am stressed, anxious or depressed. I can even look back over my life and identify “bad” times by the lapses in my memory. The drug side effect theory is also very plausible.

From your questions, I think you are coming close to a crisis point that will, I hope, enable you to make some plans and move forward with your life in some direction. I know it can’t be easy for you.

From a Mayo Clinic article on the subject:

“Some of the symptoms common to both Alzheimer’s and depression include:

Loss of interest in once-enjoyable activities and hobbies
Social withdrawal
Memory problems
Sleeping too much or too little
Impaired concentration

With so much overlap in symptoms, it can be hard to distinguish between the two disorders, especially since they so often occur together.

I am not a doctor and I have not stayed in a Holiday Inn Express lately but if I could make money on it I would bet on the depression aspect particularly based on previous posts detailing your life and lifestyle. Although, from the same posts, I could not rule out drug related symptoms.

Why not try including Tumeric in you diet.
It is as effective as Prozac Evidently .

“Every time I enter my password I have to click on “forgot your password” every time.”

And you’re repeating yourself. And you’re repeating yourself.

It’s probably not dementia. You’re just experiencing what all of us do as we get older. But more to the point, why are you not taking simple steps to counteract the memory loss you are experiencing? Write things down; no one expects you to have to carry details in your brain, but we do expect you not to have to ask for reminders multiple times. Learn what things you need to keep records of, then actually do the work of keeping those records.

And mods: why were responses removed on this thread? For no reason?
