What is the stuff inside the electric kettle at the bottom, which looks like flakes of some hard substance?

It is settled at the bottom, just like the mineral deposit The surface of the heating element getting peeled off? It looks like it. How common is this?

Lime scales. Put in CLR to clean it. Or chuck away. It is from your water.

If it is limescale use white vinegar to get rid of it, I have the same problem here and this simple solution works for me.
