Who wants to invent a new word?

Asked by Here2_4 (7152points) November 28th, 2014

So, the English language has no one word to label all types of flesh humans eat: pork, beef, birds, fish, reptiles, invertibrates, and… whatever I forgot.
Can we put our heads together and make a new word so good it gets made official and is put in dictionaries?
Let’s give it a shot!
It should have a base word, or, a basic Latin or Greek origin.

“Feat” or “Mish.”

gailcalled's avatar

(“Feat” is not a new word.)

Here2_4's avatar

Does that cover poultry too? What about lobster?
@gailcalled, I so was not paying attention! It sure is a word.

Here2_4's avatar

How about turduckdeercowpigfishlizarsnakecrawdadmoosebearen?

dxs's avatar

“Animalia”, from the kingdom that they all belong.

thorninmud's avatar

Animatter.

zenvelo's avatar

Carnmi. An amalgamation of “carne” as in carnivore, and “omni” meaning all.

Here2_4's avatar

@zenvelo , I like the thinking behind yours. It sounds slightly like an invitation though. Maybe omnicar? No. Sounds automotive.

Jaxk's avatar

What’s wrong with ‘flesh’?

Here2_4's avatar

Um, nothing comes to mind. Anybody opposed to flesh?

thorninmud's avatar

“Flesh” kind of excludes some elements of animals that are used for food, e.g. blood, gelatin, juices (as in broth), etc.

Here2_4's avatar

Good point. Not very appetizing to read, but a good point.

pinnulasfurplumis?

ucme's avatar

We already have a word, covers all foodstuffs, Scran
I’m just gonna stick with that thanks.

Here2_4's avatar

No. That word is too broad. Might as well go with groceries, chow, meal, menu or under processed dung.

jca's avatar

I’ll stick with “meat.” Thanks.

ucme's avatar

No? Good luck with that!

JLeslie's avatar

Meat. Animal. Animal products. Animal flesh.

Instupidity: Insanely stupid

Here2_4's avatar

Uhm, we have gotten off the subject. We are looking for a NEW word, that defines meat, and fish, and any other creature foods not already covered by meat and fish.

ucme's avatar

I’m going to stick my neck out & go with meat.

Coloma's avatar

Oops…must have missed the meat theme..hmmm..well….nothing comes to mind at this time.

Berserker's avatar

Carnesrandum. Carnem meaning ’‘eaten meat’’ and ’‘ad devorandum’’ being ’‘to devour’’ in Latin. (according to Google anyway) Although I guess that’s just another way to say carnivore, and I think the Latin word for meat/flesh actually excludes fish.

Jaxk's avatar

How about ‘Food with Parents’.

“Tasnutma” tasty, nutritious murdered animals

Darth_Algar's avatar

What, exactly, is wrong with “meat”? That’s a word that covers all and already exists in the English language.

talljasperman's avatar

@Darth_Algar It can get confused with nut meat… cashews and peanut meat.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@talljasperman

Maybe if you have absolutely no understanding of context.

ibstubro's avatar

Like mincemeat pie.

When I found out they weren’t joking, I never at that crap again.

Stragedy. A strategic tragedy.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Vegga-meat. Not meat but vegetable protein.

Here2_4's avatar

@kritiper , you can read, right?
@Tropical_Willie , see, we are looking for a single word which covers all non-plant food for humans, to consume. You seem to have missed the point. We are not looking for a food preference, just an appropriately defined word to offer someone who would like one. Meat somehow does not suffice as the all encompassing word, as Catholics will take offense.

JLeslie's avatar

Take offense? Or, just don’t use the word the same way?

Here2_4's avatar

I took liberties to overstress my point.

longgone's avatar

“Exanima” – not alive any more. Would include human flesh, I guess.

Not new, but “carcass” would work.

talljasperman's avatar

The Harvest.

kritiper's avatar

@Here2_4 OOPS! Sorry about that. Yes, I can read but I just don’t read everything.

kritiper's avatar

I think any other word would be so long as to make it realistically unusable. Better to stick with a shorter word to save time and not to further bore the listener/reader. I knew a guy years ago who was from Argentina. He and his wife spoke English, Spanish, and French. When conversing, they used the shortest word of whatever language to get the point across. Quite the listening experience!

Here2_4's avatar

Now that is an interesting tidbit. It would have to be confusing to all except who is using the method, even if listeners understood all the languages involved. The constant shifting would have me batty. I love the efficiency of it though.

dxs's avatar

@kritiper Would that ever have been Spanish? I’m learning Spanish now and there are so many more syllables than in English.

zenvelo's avatar

So no consensus on a word for both meat and fish but nothing else?

I was afraid Pink Floyd would have to rewrite parts of The Wall…

If you don’t eat your meat protein flesh carnmi, you can’t have any pudding! How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your carnmi?!

Nope, doesn’t work….

Here2_4's avatar

HA! @zenvelo , thank you for the great laugh! I would just die if I finished eating and didn’t get to have my pudding.

gailcalled's avatar

Pudding also means many things, depending on which side of the pond you are.

Oh! Should I be turning pink now?
