What smell is difficult to remove from you hands/fingertips?

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) November 28th, 2014

Origin:

This Thanksgiving the girl sitting across from me [at the folding table] was feeding her 11 month old baby. He was eating really well. Suddenly there was a…er…reversal of fortune and we were all handing her our napkins, and I passed her my empty plate to contain the substantial mess.

A little later I was in the kitchen. She came in, put her hands under the faucet, and said “Wash number two!” I thought the baby had puked again, but she followed up with, “I cannot get that smell off my hands!”

As we
As we speak.
As I type I can could smell onions on my fingertips.
Not a bad thing.
Not like Avon!

Poop. There I’ll say it. I remember my kitten having diarrhoea and oh dear, did that smell stick around. My sister, who is a nurse, said the smell of excrement is hard to get off your hands. I don’t know if it’s a psychological thing and you just think you can still smell it or if it is really still there. It does seem to be one of those persistent smells though.

The scent tomato leaves leave on your hands after picking tomatoes from the garden.

For food smells like garlic, one solution is to run your fingers under water while rubbing with stainless steel.

Some cooking stores even carry stainless steel bars approx. the same size as soap for this purpose.

However, a large stainless soup spoon also comes in handy for this.

I know it works on garlic, not sure about some of the others mentioned. And, of course, there’s always good ol’ lemon juice which works for lots of different noxious smells. And surprisingly also, coffee grounds.

I’m telling you, the Avon that came in those little figural ‘collectable’ bottles is probably the worst. I swear, you can get it on your hand in the morning and still smell it late afternoon. I know that skunk scent is used to make some perfumes, and Avon must have killed a hell of a bunch of skunks.

I think the stainless steel might work on onion as well as garlic, so that doesn’t really bother me.

I hate the fuel smell, and you always have to get back in the car and risk spreading it somewhere. I used to keep some wet naps in the car, but they dry out of not used. Anybody have any other solutions?

Poo is definitely long lasting, but at least your in the bathroom and have the option of a couple of good hot handwashings.

@jonsblond wins the “Lovely answer” prize for for tomato leaves. I will rub the stems of tomatoes just to get the smell on my fingers.

I’ve not noticed this with mayo, @jca, but I’ve never been a fan. I’ll pay better attention.

@ibstubro You can get the scent all year long with this. =)

bossob's avatar

@ibstubro I keep a box of cheap disposable vinyl gloves in my vehicles just for that reason.

The shipping was too high, @jonsblond. I was considering the ½ oz. spray at $7.40, but not with $6.99 shipping.
I truly love that smell.
That and mint. I love to rub the mint leaves in the yard, and they make mowing a pleasure.

@ibstubro, I tried this Tom Ford perfume that is supposed to smell like tobacco and leather (sounds gross but the reviews were really good). Far out! It was so strong I had a headache in about half an hour. I tried to wash it off but ended up having to have a shower to get rid of it completely.

Sorry, @bossob, good idea. Maybe not for every time, but definitely filling up before a long trip.

That’s bizarre, @Earthbound_Misfit, that some one would want to smell like tobacco and leather. Maybe a bit on a card under your car seat or on the heat register, but I’d not want to smell of it personally.
From a guy that just checked into smelling like a tomato plant leaf!

@ibstubro I do get that it sounds insane. These are the reviews for it so I thought I’d try it. Ugh… that’s all I can say.

Tomato leaves huh? Well that’s a very unique smell.
