Creative gifts for the niece and nephews?

Asked by syz (35938points) December 9th, 2014

The boys are around 5–6 years of age, the niece is 12. I try to give gifts that are more than just another toy in the pile and always lots of books (examples: buddy bumpers, glowing ant farms, kites) and I’m wondering if anyone has found anything super cool this year.

For the boys, if they haven’t got it, Thinking Putty?

Will you be my aunt?

Are they too far away to spend time with? If not, maybe do some kind of event with each, a place they like to go, or a movie they want to see or something. An experience.
If that won’t work, I have no idea, I have nobody in that age range these days.

Good Luck with this!

I’m a big fan or creative gifts, hands on artsy things. Clay, paints, colored pens and pencils, stencils, drawing books as well as all things nature. Also animal related movies like Black Beauty, Two Brothers, any films that promote kindness and caring for our natural environment and animals. The greatest gifts we can give young children are the gifts of creative passion and curiosity.

All of the above would be great for the littler kids and the 12 year old most likely has her own agenda. I think getting older kids what they really want is best, there comes a time when we need to respect the individual childs desires over our own agendas. I’d ask the parents what she really wants and colaborate on what you might get for her.

Spirographs are making a big comeback. I just saw it’s the 50th anniversary of it’s introduction.

There are some great ideas on this list of STEM gifts for kids (with age guide).

Maybe more food for thought than actionable, but since I receive mail from other countries as part of my job, I’m collecting the cancelled stamps to give to my young nephew.
