Do you often get sick when you are winding down for a holiday?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) December 12th, 2014

I’m not on leave until the end of next week but I’m definitely winding down. Still got lots to do but my motivation is dead-in-the-water and so I’ve not been as busy and productive as I normally am. Typically, because I’ve slowed down, I’m coming down with a cold! I rarely get sick, but this morning my throat is sore, my nose is congested and I can feel a whoop doozey of a cold brewing! So annoying.

Do you get sick when you wind down for a holiday? Why do you think this happens?

No. I think you get sick because you exhaust yourself before the holiday. Get more sleep, don’t touch your face, and wash your hands when you touch things other people have touched. Stay away from sick people if you can.

Seriously get some Sambucol immediately!

I think there is excess sickness before a holiday because there is more socializing and more activity in the stores.

However nerves can have a lot to do with some illnesses. My mother was sick before EVERY holiday and it was damned annoying. Usually something that was highly personal like hemorrhoids.

Oh without doubt it has something to do with being run down. I’m coming to the end of four huge years at work so yep, burned out.

@orbutsbi, I’ll try to get some. I’m in Australia and it says you can get it online. I’ll check the chemist too. In the meantime, I’ll try hot toddies (without the alcohol for now since it’s the middle of the day).

I think you are female. If you tend to be low on iron, I find getting my iron up into normal ranges helps me resist illness.

The sooner you start the better, @Earthbound_Misfit. Zicam or something similar at the least. I have known them to help on more than one occasion.

Up your vitamins and eat your greens! :)
