Can someone please explain to me why Fluther has been getting a lot of questions about recovering xlsx files?

Asked by jca (36062points) December 13th, 2014

Lately, I have been seeing a bunch of questions about recovering xlsx files. When I log on to Fluther in the wee hours of the morning, Eastern Standard Time, these questions are here. I see that they seem to get deleted. (if you search for the term “xlsx” you will see a few, one just one day ago, one just this morning).

What do the questions mean?

Why are they deleted?

Why, most recently, are there questions on this at least once a week?

Not only xlsx files, but also other file formats have been asked too. I still remember the first time I saw that kind of question. At first I thought it was genuine and I answered it. But then after a while some spammers came. Then more similar questions came up, and this time I didn’t bother to look.

My guess is that all those questions are asked by the same person, or at least from the same location. The mods know that they are asked just to link to spam sites, so they delete them.

I thought I saw that question more than once! Thanks, now I know I’m not losing my mind. I don’t know why they’re getting deleted either. They looked legit to me.

Yup, @Mimishu1995 has it right. They are spam setups for a file recovery service.
