What would be the first steps one would have to take to get a law changed?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23118points) December 19th, 2014

This has to do with the trucking industry here in B.C from Oct1,to Mar31 we are required to carry our tire chains on our transport trucks.
My thought and it has to do with very poorly privately maintained roads, during the time we are required to carry our chains, we should be able to add another 3,000kgs to our drive tires, as long as we still do not exceed our GVW meaning it would have to come off the load at the rear of the trailer and put up front.
That extra 3,000kgs would make a world of difference on icy roads.
Right now our axels are for a max load 5,500 steering,17,000 drives, 24,000 middle and 17,000 for the back end.
Moving an extra 3,000kgs to the drives would be great for winter roads.

So what would be my first steps at getting this started?

Some laws never change.

In CA. here it is illegal for any vehicle without a driver to exceed 60mph. lol

Talk to your local politicians, @SQUEEKY2.

@Coloma I don’t want a Google car going more than 60! Smart law!

I’m guessing the press would be a good place to ask questions like this. Maybe contact the media in Victoria and ask them, as they are the ones who cover this stuff most closely.
Vancouver media would also be a good source for info, being a significantly larger city than the capital.
If you have a drivers’ union, maybe have the spokesperson approach the parliament.

Good luck with this!

How the truck would I know? :)

There’s a big difference in what we were taught in civics classes regarding the enactment or revision of legislation, and the REAL way things work. In the real world, the primary method is of course to buy the laws you want. Failing that, the secondary (and far less dependable) route is to mass like minded individuals in pursuit of your goal. In your case, have you thought about getting your union involved?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@stanleybmanly I never thought of talking to the Teamsters, but it’s a start, maybe a driver petition ? or something like that?

@SQUEEKY2: Talk to your unit Local president.

Become a local politician, maybe you could rig the election.

Raise a lot of money and bribe the politicians. More than one.

Nothing in government is ever done for a good reason. It is done because money changes hands.

zenvelo's avatar

The Teamsters won’t like it because it means fewer trucks on the road so fewer drivers.

Go to the provincial trucking association and tell them you have an idea on ho two haul more freight during the winter. Get the trucking companies to lobby your bill and it will get passed before spring!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@zenvelo WE are not talking about increasing payloads, just redistributing axel weights for winter, the increase on the drive axle would have to come off the rear axels and put up front to increase traction.
We still have to be within our max G.V.W.

zenvelo's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 so this is a safety issue? Does it save any body money? Maybe get an insurance lobbying group to show it will reduce accidents, and they take it t the trucking companies to show it will save premium costs.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Of course it’s a safety issue, and the time saved by not having to have the driver chain up,would be huge, plus the extra traction due to the increase in weight would be a benefit to everyone on the highway.
