What's one really cool word for today? Part 4.

Asked by ibstubro (18804points) December 30th, 2014

There seems to have been renewed interest in the question lately, so I’ll begin anew.

I’ll start:

Junket

Usually refers to an excursion or trip. Start slow and repeat it faster and faster and you’ll imitate a train.

Meniscus (from memory) the curve at the top of a column of mercury or water in a cylinder (such as the barrel of a thermometer or barometer), caused by the surface tension of the fluid and the hydrophobic quality of the surface of the cylinder.

Somebody else can do “hydrophobic”.

* You did ask for “cool”, and thermometer popped into my thoughts. That was just serendipitous.

flapdragon -an old game in which the players snatch raisins, plums, etc., out of burning brandy, and eat them.

Actually I never heard of it before, but it was word of the day on dictionary.com and I thought it odd enough I posted it here. Great game for the kiddies! lol

Schaudenfreude. The love of watching youtube failures and worlds dumbest whatever on tv.

^ “Schadenfreude”, actually. “Schaden” is “damage”, and “Freude” is “joy”.
