Happy New Year! Will you be eliminating salt, sugar, fat or other unhealthy stuff in 2015?

Asked by StaceyD (215points) January 1st, 2015

Last year I significantly reduced my sugar intake because my sugar levels were higher than usual. By the end of the fall, my levels were back to normal and I lost 17 pounds. This year I am reducing my salt and fat intake because high blood pressure runs in my family. I was researching fats – “good” and “bad” – as well as salt. I was surprised to find out salt is actually a chemical, which I guess most elements are. http://www.seidlerchem.com/salt.htm Will you be eliminating anything from your diet this year? I also want to reduce my intake of wine but will start with salt and fat :)

Naw, why bother just to live longer and pay more taxes, whats the point?

I’m reducing the amount of cream I put in my coffee

Eliminating? No. Reducing some and trying to make healthier eating choices overall? Yes! I refuse to completely eliminate the junk foods that I enjoy.

I actually need to gain weight so while I’m planning on improving my diet, it’s not exactly in the ways you describe.

In college I’ve gotten a bit into the habit of eating a lot of processed easy foods like mac and cheese. This seems to no longer be an option to me as I am now physiologically repulsed by most of the foods I used to enjoy. I actually feel sick if I try to eat mac and cheese nowadays.

So I’m aiming to eat more foods that require a bit of effort. I want to buy more unprocessed ingredients and spend some time on prep. I’m not outlawing any foods for myself but will be trying to eat a generally healthy diet composed of decent ingredients. That’s all I really need.

It has the added bonus that these meals will probably be lots yummier than the shit I’ve been eating, so I hope to stimulate my appetite and eat more, thus gaining the weight I need.

Not likely.

No I will continue to eat everything but in moderation, with no overindulgence of sugar, salt or fat.

I don’t think salt, sugar, and fat are inherently unhealthy. No, I won’t be eliminating them from my diet. That would make for a very boring life indeed.

Nope, I’m 28 and ripped. If anything I need more calories because I’m poor and don’t eat dinner every night lol.

No, my diet is already very healthy with occasional splurges of not-so-healthy food at birthdays, Christmas and the like.

sugar, salt and fat are all essential nutrients. Might as well no longer drink anything containing water.

I won’t be eliminating any of these things but I will be limiting them. I need to change my diet because I have terrible GERD along with a hiatal hernia. I need to limit the amount of cheese that I eat and this makes me very sad.

4 weeks ago, a co worker asked me if I have an aerobic workout. I said no. That night I decided I needed one. Now I do 100 girl pushups (working up to boy pushups) and a whole bunch of other toning exercises. I’ve lost 12 pounds and my tummy is beginning to show the beginning of a six pack. The whole regimen takes only 20 minutes. But now I have to wear a belt. Yay! I was 140 for 10 years, now I’m 128. Yay!

Oh yeah, I also eat half the amount of food that I did before, without feeling hungry or deprived. Same food, just half the amount.

I don’t believe in eliminating entire food or nutrient categories.

I believe Julia Child had the right idea and she lived to a healthy ripe old age.

“Moderation in everything, even moderation :)”

She lived in the middle of the whole “margarine instead of butter because it’s healthier” craze. We now know that’s ridiculous because margarine is full of trans fat which is FAR WORSE for your health.

Julia never abandoned butter to get on the margarine train. She didn’t use tons of it like Paula Deen, but enough for decent flavor. I did the same and glad of it. Plus margarine tastes like crap in addition to it’s unhealthy aspects.

I eat very little extra salt to begin with so eliminating it would be ridiculous. But the primary reason I so seldom eat fast food is because they load it up with so much salt, it’s practically inedible. I let my tastebuds be my guide.

Apparently that’s working out fine because after my last blood test results, my Dr. asked me if I was on any kind of sodium restricted diet because the levels were so low. I guess my taste buds are a pretty good guide.

If you saw some of the latest results from studies on artificial sweeteners like Aspartame, you’d be a lot less inclined to substitute them for sugar I’ll bet.

I can’t stand the crappy taste so I don’t have to worry about damage from artificial sweeteners. I just use less sugar. I normally dilute my sodas about 50% with water and still taste fine.

If I’m baking cookies, I always reduce the sugar in the recipe by 25% of more. I don’t substitute with artificially sweet chemicals. I just get used to less sugar rather than eliminate it altogether.

My mom also usually reduces the sugar in recipes, just like @Buttonstc. She doesn’t like things being so sweet, and recipes often are quite sweet. Even though recipes are like a chemistry project, they usually are fine with sugar reduced ¼ to ⅓.

Yes every year same promise so much so that I am only kidding myself now.

Perfect answer, @Seaofclouds. Seems like overall balance should be the target, not complete elimination. I am planning on reducing my junk food intake since I need to reduce my BMI, and, in 2015 I really do want to partially (at least) replace diet Pepsi with a variety of iced teas that I enjoy.

However, unlike some misguided people, in my book, pizza is NOT junk food. (Besides, one week without pizza makes one weak.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Nah. I reduced all that years and years ago.

livelaughlove21's avatar

No.

Fat is not unhealthy. Sugar is not unhealthy. Salt is not unhealthy.

Anything can be “unhealthy” if eaten in large amounts. Eliminating any of these things is completely unnecessary.

I eat all three and I’m pretty darn healthy.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I went very low salt in my diet. A bit too low. I mean down to where I should have had a seizure. Too low is as bad as too high. Moderation is the key.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Could also be because your fluid intake was too high @Adirondackwannabe. Happened to me. Drove my sodium levels too low.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I’ve always drank lots of water. The OR nurse said wow you have great skin. Then she looked at my screen, and said maybe too good.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I used to drink lots and lots of water, but when my sodium levels started dropping, and the Doctor started asking me questions, I backed waaay off the pop and water. I’m down to about a 5th of what I had been drinking. Now I only drink it if I’m thirsty and my body is telling me to do it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Also, I asked my doctor if adding more salt to my food would help. He said no, that’s not how it works. So….
