Sometimes the best stories are the ones that are not well known. Which ones do you think deserve more awareness than at present?

That the man in charge of the subways in NYC during 9/11 evacuated all the people from the stations nearby after the first plane hit. He directed conductors to not allow people to exit off trains and for all people on the platforms to board the next train even if it was not the train they were waiting for. This was before the second plane hit and before a building fell down. The way I heard the story no one was harmed in the underground system because of it.

I heard it on a news story many years ago once, and never heard about it again.

I assume it is true, and if it is he should get an award. He did that while people in the second tower were being told to stay put and the city was not yet in an official panic that it was terrorism.

A guy called Vasili Arkhipov who saved the world

I wonder how many people know of him. During the Cuban Missile crisis, tensions were pretty high between the US and the Soviet Union.

Vasili Arkhipov of the USSR was made second in command on the B-59, one of four attack submarines that was ordered to travel to Cuba on October 1st, 1962. The sub contained 22 torpedoes, one of which was nuclear, holding the same strength as the bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima. The captains of each of the four subs were given permission to fire their nuclear torpedoes at their own discretion, so long as they had the backing of the political officer on board. Unknown to the crew of the B-59, the United States began their naval blockade of Cuba on October 24th and informed the Soviets that they would be dropping practice depth charges (think warning shots) to force subs to surface and be identified.

Moscow could not communicate this information to the B-59 due to it being too deep underwater to receive radio transmissions. On October 27th, 1962, US destroyers and the aircraft carrier USS Randolph located the sub, trapped it, and began dropping depth charges to force it to surface. The sub’s crew, which had been traveling for nearly 4 weeks with very little communication with Moscow, was very tired and not aware of circumstances. The sub’s captain, Valentin Savitsky, believed that nuclear war had already broken out between the Soviet Union and the US and wanted to fire the nuclear torpedo.

Fortunately, particularly given the heightened tensions at the time, in this case, one other person had veto power over firing besides the captain and the political officer, the second in command Vasili Arkhipov. Vasili, despite being second in command on the B-59, was the leader of the fleet of the four Soviet subs sent. Had Vasili not been present, nuclear war would have likely happened as both the captain and the political officer wanted to launch the nuclear torpedo. Vasili vehemently disagreed, arguing that since no orders had come from Moscow in a long time, such a drastic action was ill-advised and the sub should surface to contact Moscow. A heated argument broke out- legend, probably false- says punches were thrown. Eventually, though, Vasili won the day (his reputation as a hero in the K-19 mutiny reportedly helped in the debate) and the sub surfaced. Upon meeting their American enemies, they were instructed to head back to Russia. They obliged, (additionally, they began to have mechanical issues on board the sub) and headed east. Nuclear war was averted.

I’d like to see a lot more background info on what happened and why with the overthrow of a couple of governments, like China and Cuba that took the US somewhat by surprise.

I would love to see Hollywood make a historically accurate biopic about the Wright brothers and their contributions to flight.

I’d like to see a lot more investigation into the death of Princess Diana other than, “the guy was driving too fast.” I say this because it was interesting (and tragic) that this happened to her at the same time she was depressed and complaining about the state of her marriage (on a national tv interview) and how awful it was (for her) to be playing the role of Princess.

I found this story about the subways. It talks about one subway driver who was amazing at getting everyone to safety. I’m not sure if this contradicts my original post, or maybe goes along side of it? At the end of the article it sounds like the person in charge was taking actions also. No matter what the exact stories regarding the subways on 9/11 it seems pretty obvious to me they deserve a lot of credit they didn’t get.

One more story. This might have been the one I had heard part of and didn’t remember it was the PATH trains. For those who don’t know, the PATH train travels from Manhattan to NJ under the river and then stops two or three places in New Jersey and then back to New York. There was a station inside the Twin Towers on the lower level. Several buildings in New York have direct access to the subway. The subway either being within the building or you can walk right from the subway platforms into the buildings underground. PATH and the subway in NY are separate systems, but basically the same idea—trains traveling underground.
