Why is bear grass called bear grass?

Asked by awaytoolong (36points) July 15th, 2007

I saw fields of it hiking in the Cascades and was wondering where/how it got its name.

According to this site, the plant is called bear grass "because in spring bears seek out and eat the roots and tender young leaves."
