Can you help me understand the market for "Anti-Gas" preparations?

Asked by josie (30934points) January 28th, 2015

Seems to me that if your dietary composition is reasonably consistent, then you would not need anti-gas preparations that are frequently advertised on the TV.
So who exactly is buying this stuff?
Are they doing something wrong?

For me, bell peppers are like kryptonite for my pipes. They seem to get slipped into the darnedest of foods! Of course, by the time I notice it’s too late. Coupled with rapidly advancing age I can render a room unsuitable for human habitation pretty fast. No anti-gas preparation could save the poor souls I have left gifts for in the elevator.
I am approaching the age my Father said “Never trust a fart”

Sometimes you just want something you like, even though you know it will clear a room.

I don’t personally use any anti-gas medications but I could see others with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (or the more common IBS) choosing to do so. Sometimes having a good diet isn’t enough to have good bowel behavior, sadly.

When I was a kid, I was with my Father in an elevator and he let one rip, turned to the guy next to him and said ‘That was disgusting!’ I later asked why he was blaming the fart on the man and he said “I didn’t. I was just telling him it was disgusting.”

I don’t use anti-gas preparations however..i eat a lot of veggies, tons of cabbage, beans, peppers, salads, etc. The more fruits and veggies you eat the more gas is emitted.
Tonights meal was baked cabbage and baked potatoes. Detonation imminent.

I use them. Not that often, but I do. Perhaps because I don’t eat the best. Or perhaps because stress goes to my stomach.

Some people are more gassy than others. It probably has to do with the bacteria in their gut if they don’t have some other significant health problem.

It is not abnormal to create gas, even painful or socially embarrassing amounts.

Seems to me that if you understood the human digestive system you would not question the need for anti-gas sometimes, even with a consistent diet.

@Darth_Algar

There you go. I admit I have no understanding of the human digestive system. Busted. You apparently do. Now what?
