Eastern Block equivalents of Motown, Doo Wop, Funk music?

Asked by chbrueckner (21points) February 1st, 2015

As a german, I know that during the Cold War, the east german music scene kind of mirrored the music that was played in western german radio. It was often less well produced, I guess because they did not have the same means of production as western bands.

Now I am trying to find musical equivalents to popular 60s and 70s style western music, like Motown (The Supremes, The Isley Brothers etc.), Doo Wop (The Platters, The Drifters) or maybe even Funk.

Do you think there is such a thing, and where could I find it? I’m currently using Spotify and can’t find anything in that direction.

Also, because I mentioned eastern germany, it doesn’t have to be german – just any former soviet bloc country.

Could you link the kind of music you are describing? Specific songs, if possible? I won’t be able to help, but others might if they had some more information.

Hi longgone, an example for soviet bloc bands copying western music style would be this:

This band, “The Sputniks” tried to emulate the western “beat music”: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beat_music

Now I’m looking for more examples like that, or a way to find it – YouTube does not seem to have a lot, or maybe I’m looking for it in the wrong way.

If you meant examples for Motown, it would be songs like this:
