Anyone here ever have a bad experience with Mucinex DM?

Asked by yankeetooter (9651points) February 4th, 2015

Shortness of breath, nausea, weakness, swelling of legs?

I stopped taking it 12 or so hours ago, but am still feeling the effects.

Insomnia. None of the stuff you mentioned, though.

If you’re only supposed to take it every 12 hours, you should expect the effects to last at least that long.

I’ve discovered that the aging body (or at least mine) has more and more allergic reactions of various degrees of severity to both RX and OTC meds. Your symptoms sound like an allergic reaction and fairly severe. (I have never taken the Mucinex myself.) If it were me and the symptoms don’t start to abate soon, I would go to Urgent Care if there is one near you or the ER.

I’ve never taken it.

Those symptoms are the same as a heart attack. If I were you I would take an aspirin and not be alone for the next few hours if you are reluctant to go to the ER.

All drugs can cause a reaction, and even if you are the only person ever to have those symptoms from that drug it doesn’t matter.

My sister, when she worked the burn unit at a hospital, had a TENS patient that wound up being allergic to Tylenol.

That sounds like an allergic reaction to me. The worst I’ve ever experienced with Mucinex DM is a spacey, disconnected feeling (which would be from the “DM” part of Mucinex DM).

The DM part would be the same as all DM’s. Generic drug store, Robutussin, etc. I only mention it because if you have taken a different brand of cough medicine before with the same expectorant and suppressant and you were fine, just go back to using thenother brand, and also I recommend not getting the extended 12 hour one.

Are you feeling better?

Now I am wondering if the cough was accompanied by other cold symptoms, because cough can indicate a lung and/or heart condition along with the other symptoms described. Also, kidney function troubles.

I hope the OP comes back soon and let’s us know he is ok.

Does the OP mention a cough?

JLeslie's avatar

The OP took DM, I sure hope it’s for a cough.

@JLeslie…somewhat better, thanks. Still generally horrible, but without all the extra mentioned above. (I’m a she, lol!)

What are you sick with? Cold? Flu? That crazy bronchitis going around? If your cough is very bad you can ask your dctor for a prescription.

Also, I’m pretty sure the drugs in DM are contraindictaed with some other drugs. Drugs like SSRI’s and MAOI’s. Do you take any antidepressants? Also, if you already have high blood pressure those drugs aren’t recommended.

Bad cough…haven’t been to the doctor yet. No other medications being taken right now.

JLeslie's avatar

Just a bad cough? Otherwise, you feel just fine? Is it a productive cough?

yankeetooter's avatar

It became one after taking the Mucinex DM…

JLeslie's avatar

Became productive? You’re coughing phlegm up?

Darth_Algar's avatar

You might try plain Mucinex (guaifenesin), without the dextromethorphan. It sounds, in my layman’s, non-medically educated view, like you’re likely having a reaction to the dextromethorphan. I’ve heard of it causing allergic reactions before. And if that is the case then you may want to use caution with other cough revilers, as a huge number of them contain dextromethorphan.

JLeslie's avatar

Well, productive is good. That makes me worry less.

livelaughlove21's avatar

Mucinex is an expectorant. A cough becoming productive after taking Mucinex seems pretty normal to me. That’s sort of the point – to get the mucus out.

JLeslie's avatar

Coughs are productive when caused by phlegm and other specific irritants. When they are caused by TB, cancer, congestive heart failure, even flu, they are not productive even if you take an expectorant, because there is nothing to cough up.
