How does Uber charge you for a ride, and how do you know if you are being charged the correct amount?

Regular taxicabs have meters on their dashboards, which I understand are highly regulated and checked.
But Uber uses private individuals in their own private cars. Presumably they don’t have meters. So, how do you know what you should be charged for a ride? Or, if you are driver, how do determine how much to charge?
