Should pro football quarterbacks be exempt from winning MVP awards?

Asked by kritiper (25757points) February 6th, 2015

It’s given that they are very important to the team. Maybe the other players should at least be eligible for OTQMVP (other than quarterback MVP) awards?

I know little of US football, but enough about sport to give an accurate response.
No, they should not be exempt, the QB takes much of the criticism when things go wrong for his team, so should receive deserved acclaim by the same measure.

I think sometimes they are the MVP, and sometimes it is someone else. I feel they should be eligible too.

Side note: In Baseball, pitchers can, but rarely do, receive an MVP award. They do have their own award, the Cy Young.

That’s because batters have their own award, the Silver Slugger, as well. Then there are the Gold Glove award in fielding (one award for each position, including pitcher).

No, of course they should not be exempt. This question makes no sense. Why would they be? Because often times, a team’s QB IS their most valuable player.

But I WILL add that I believe QB’s get too much credit when a team wins and too much blame when they lose. Especially with the media, and NFL quarterbacks. Like how they promote games sometimes. Say, New England is gonna play Green Bay, and the media promos before the game say stuff like, “Watch the battle of the Great Quartebacks as Tom Brady takes one Aaron Rodgers!” LOL.

This is just going too far. What about the other starting 21 guys on each team? As if they have nothing to do with it. Offensive linemen rarely get as much credit as they deserve for protecting those valuable quarterbacks; giving them sufficient time to throw the ball. I don’t care how good of a passer you are, if a defensive player is in your face the second you drop back to throw, you aren’t going to do very well.

(Of course, ask any quarterback, and he will readily admit to how valuable his blockers are, and not hesitate for a second to heap praise on them for a job well done. They know which side their bread is buttered on!)
