Palestinians are typically Muslim. Israelis are typically Jewish.

I can’t give you a 100% accurate answer, as I don’t have all the information, but I can let you in on my understanding based off of information gathered from people that are affected by the situation:
– Israeli occupation of the British Mandate of Palestine (including West Bank).
– Gaza was forced into a refugee-style state.
– And while Israel withdrew from Gaza, they still control a lot more of it than they should.
– Plus, Israel has an issue with Hamas, which is where a lot of the fighting stems from (aside from Palestinian retaliation).

Hope that helps some, or at least provokes someone to correct/add to my comment.

The irony is that all of the parties involved are classified as Semitic people. For 2000 years the land of Palestine had existed since it was designated such by the Romans following the suppression of the Jewish revolt in 70 AD (ACE). The occupants of that land were (and are) Palestinians. The establishment of the modern day state of Israel was accomplished through the defacto confiscation of the land of those occupants and their wholesale eviction. Today’s Palestinians are the refugees of that eviction and their descendants. The Palestinans are in effect scattered among the nations bordering their homeland in refugee camps and settlements, but just as with the Jews 2000 years ago, their diaspora is spreading throughout the world.

How to capsulize thousands of years of history into a short paragraph. Let’s try with a small slice.

Great Briton relinquished it’s control over the old Ottoman Empire and the Palestinian lands on May 14, 1948. The same day Israel announced it independence. The next day the U.S. recognized Israel as a sovereign state and the surrounding Arab states began bombing Tel Aviv. The Arabs have been bombing Israel ever since.

I agree with @Jaxk, but I’ll add that the UN voted to create Israel, it’s not just the US who was in favor of it. Not that I think it was all done for altruistic reasons. I think many European countries were happy to give the Jews a place to go to, and leave their own countries.

@PriceisRight My Palestinian friends think Hamas is horrible. It’s not just the Israelis and Jews who do.

I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if the Arabs had been accepting of the Jews and Israel. Maybe a bunch more Arabs would be living in a democratic country with equal rights.
