Have you had a headache last several days?

Asked by Haleth (18947points) February 10th, 2015

I’m having shooting pains in the back of my head. It’s been happening, on and off, for four days now.

After some basic googling, it sounds probably not serious and like it will go away on its own. It could be a type of migraine called an “icepick headache.” The pain isn’t interfering with my daily life, it’s just strange that it’s lasted this long. This kind of thing has never happened to me before. It disappears for a few hours if I take tylenol and drink plenty of water, but it always comes back.

How concerning is this? Is it “oh dear god, get thee to a doctor!” possible brain aneurysm level of concern? Or annoying but harmless, like a paper cut? I’ve also been drinking coffee since I was 14 and not getting enough sleep during my work week. But after years and years of that, why now?

If you’re not the kind of person who regularly suffers from headaches and migraines, or if you are but you suddenly develop a very different kind of headache or migraine that you’re not used to, you are supposed to make an appointment. It could be nothing, but it also might be something. Only one way to find out.

I’ve suffered from migraines since I was five, and I have had headaches last that long – but it’s normal for me. It doesn’t sound like it’s normal for you, so it’s better to be safe than sorry in your case.

If you are not a headache person I would get it checked by a doctor sooner rather than later. I would say if it suddenly gets more painful it is an emergency. If you live alone I would get to the doctor within a day or two.

Any chance you skipped caffeine the last few days? Caffeine withdrawal headache usually is the front and top of your head, but it can trigger all sorts of headaches. You have to treat caffeine like a real drug and keep a constant level or the withdrawal starts.

I have headaches like that on a daily basis when the weather goes from mild to disgustingly hot in South Carolina. Or if the weather changes drastically, which it often does. At least one headache a day that goes away if I take ibuprofen. I believe I saw a doctor about it when it started happening a few years ago, but he wasn’t too concerned. They haven’t gotten worse, so I’m guessing it’s nothing serious. I get mild headaches from looking at a computer all day or being stressed/anxious as well. All normal for me.

However, if it’s not normal for you, I’d get it checked out just in case. It’s probably nothing bad, but better safe than sorry.

@livelaughlove21 You get headaches in the back of your head from change in season? Interesting. I think of headaches at the back of the head as very rare. Maybe they happen more often than I realize. I do have a girlfriend who gets back of the head migraines (the OP mentioned those too) and that was the first time I heard of them when my friend mentioned it several months ago.

@JLeslie Eh, not at the very back of my head, but toward the back, sure.

You say sure, but I’ve never experienced that. I’m not much of a headache person though, so my experience means very little.

I think that you should go to a doctor and be checked.

Yes, but mine are almost all due to weather changes and/or sinuses and/or allergies. And mine are generally dull throbs towards the front, not acute pains.

Seeing a doctor is not a bad idea,.

@JLeslie My “sure” was in response to your question about my headaches, not whether it’s common or not.

I honestly won’t be too concerned with going to a dr unless it really doesn’t go away at all in the next couple of days. It can be as simple as stress or sleeping in the wrong position. If it doesn’t go away, YES, go to a dr, otherwise try sleeping on a different pillow, and they say an ice pack in the back of your neck can also help. Maybe it’s a weather change, I get bad headaches when it’s really hot.
