Did you know there is going to be a solar eclipse on March 20th?

Asked by Stinley (11525points) March 4th, 2015

Are you able to view it in your area? Any eclipse stories you’d care to share?

I am looking forward to seeing it – it will be partial in my part of England but more full than the one in 2009 that I viewed in London.

I went to see and experience totality twice: March 7, 1970 off the coast of Massachusetts (I forget the island.) and on July 10, 1972 in Cap-Chat Quebec. The first time the sky was clear and I took a great movie of it. When totality whisked across us people got quiet and a flock of birds took off. Eerie.
The second time my friend and I drove 12 hours each way and were rewarded with a cloudy day. We may not have seen the eclipse but we sure had fun along the way. I recall swinging from a car tire swing over a river in Maine and flinging myself as far out into the water as possible. 40+ years ago and I still smile just thinking about it.

Yes I did, although i’m not too excited, we get a partial eclipse whenever the MIL bends over to tie her shoe. That gag was brought to you by Les Dawsons’ dusty old joke book

I might be able to see a bit of it from here in Norway, but it isn’t making a great swath across any really well populated parts of the Earth.

Best place to be would be the Norwegian territory of Svalbard.

If you want to see pictures taken of this eclipse, look up pictures that will be taken at a place called Longyearbyen on Svalbard.

I’m not one for portents, although I am a bit tickled that the eclipse will be within 12 hours of the Spring equinox.

Here’s a map by NASA (US) that illustrates the path of the total eclipse.
