Anyone have experiences with wheaten terriers?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) March 21st, 2015

We just adopted a new dog, Duncan, a 10-year-old wheaten terrier. So far so good. He has not exhibited a lot of the terrier behaviors I don’t much care for. I haven’t heard him bark, for example.

I have known a few wheatens, and adopted some older dogs. The wheatens are lovely, but tend to have the terrier stubbornness, and older adopted dogs tend to wait a month or two or three before having the confidence to assert their true selves. The true self is probably a lovely dog, congratulations!

The only one I knew was a handful but his owners weren’t very good trainers. Lovely dogs though and yours in much older.

Congrats on your new family member. I do not have any personal experience with Wheatens, but…all adopted animals can take several months before their true natures become apparent.
As they become more comfortable and claim their new territory their personalities and behaviors will unfold. I’d say after 3–6 months you will have a pretty solid picture of his temperament. This is true for dogs, cats, horses, birds. Being re-homed is a stessor and some animals will be extra shy and reserved and others more assertive/aggressive depending on species, age, training etc.

I work with one on a weekly basis. She’s a very sweet dog! I know a bit about the breed so let me know if you need any advice.
