What are some things you've been late to the party on?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) March 23rd, 2015

I recently starting watching Fraggle Rock, and it’s so hilarious and charming, can’t believe I never grew up watching this show when I was a kid. What about you?

I would liked to have seen uncle traveling Matt.

I missed the first two years of Star Trek because I lived in Alaska at the time, and the only TV was AFRTS (Armed Forces Radio and Television Service, and nothing was first run. At the time (the mid-60s) they were showing Crusader Rabbit. So I had to catch all the episodes in reruns in syndication.

A much shorter list would be on what subjects in which I haven’t been late to the party.

In which I’m late? The most recent that comes to mind is regarding WW II. The SO and I visited Berlin this month, and the amount of new information absorbed on an old subject is shameful. The most scandalous was when my boss’s wife told me that her husband had been having an affair with a co-worker and was shocked to find out that I hadn’t had a clue.

Every popular television show since 2002, most current novels, and most current films. Every once in awhile I’m tempted by something that gets consistent raves like Downton Abbey, but I expect that I’ll need something to do in my dotage, so it can all wait until then.

@Espiritus_Corvus Hey, I thought we were spending our dotage eating brownies and watching The African Queen.

Oh, yes. Curled up on that art deco sofa, the aroma of chocolate wafting in from the kitchen, a light snow outside, and sweaty old Bogie and prim Kate winding down the Ulanga in that decrepit one-cylinder launch hiding from the Kaiserliche Marine. I haven’t forgotten, bebe.

Being both a confirmed anglophile and a dedicated Netflix watcher, I’ve discovered lots of great British movies and TV series that I’d never heard of or wasn’t attracted to at the time they came out.

Three TV series examples: Jekyl, Extras, and the original UK version of House of Cards (which in my opinion is far superior to the current American one).

One movie example: Page Eight with the always superb Bill Nighy.

I was very late getting a cell phone and even later getting a smartphone.

Late getting a computer.

DVR! I wish I had not been so late this.

Buying something online. I still almost never do it. I doubt I have purchased ten things online if you don’t count hotel rooms and airline tickets.

Gel manicures. I didn’t even know what one was until about three years ago.

I don’t have a smartphone either! It’s so great.

Smartphones. Skype. Make-up. The Simpsons. Online banking. E-books.

…and Fluther, maybe?

Pretty much all of it. Kind of lost my drive to be up on things. Figured I’ll enjoy it when I get to it. It will still be new to me. :)

Besides this question?

The history of WWII. The lack of knowledge on it is utterly shameful, especially since Dad fought in it. Trips to Munich, Nuremberg, Dachau, Berlin and Israel have sparked an interest that is growing.

On a lighter note, the car was recently in for repairs, and a rental was offered for the interim. The engine started by pressing a button instead of turning a key. It rocked my world. And I don’t understand the point of it.
