Does the sound of Thunder scare you or excite you?

Asked by Safie (1223points) April 3rd, 2015

I have to say I actually like the sound of Thunder, as a child I used to be terribly scared of it, and I remember people saying that it was the voice of God, as a child it made it even more scary hearing that… but now Let the thunder roll, it’s exciting in fact, nice for cuddling up among other things lol.

I don’t like it. The last time I heard really bad thunder I soiled myself out if fear.

dappled_leaves's avatar

I enjoy it. Not so much that I would capitalize it in a sentence, though.

When I think of thunder, Prince’s song comes to mind. It was like thunder all through the night, and a promise to see Jesus in the morning light, Love say “Take my hand, it’ll be alright, C’mon save your soul tonight”

In other words, no, thunder doesn’t scare me. When I was little, my mom would sing the quintessential rainstorm song: “My Favorite Things” from Sounds of Music. But, when I was in college, someone said, “Thunder and lightning is the heavens and earth making love,” so, that’s how I see it and love it.

Now, if it’s really dark, and raining on my windshield at 3 ‘o clock in the morning… this plays in my head… Thunder…

I love thunder and even lightning. It’s nature’s way of showing her teeth. I know we’re supposed to stay away from windows, but I sit right next to them so I can watch the show. Our house were I grew up got hit by lightning twice. When you hear that snap you know it’s close.

Love it, and could never figure out why some people are scared of it.

I love thunder, especially at night when I’m in bed. Oddly enough, so does my cat. We like to sit on the porch and watch a storm when he rolls in. Only once did we really freak out. I was living in a 3rd floor apartment that faced a parking lot. We were sitting on the patio, he on my lap, watching a particularly violent rainstorm—lots of thunder and lightening—when suddenly a bolt of lightening hit a electrical box not far from my apartment. Sparks flew everywhere and the noise was deafening. Kitty shot straight up from my lap, raced into the house through the Arcadia door, hid under the bed and stayed there for hours. He must have forgotten the experience, though, because he always wants to go outside with me when it rains.

Semi related: Got tornado watches scrolling across the TV last night. It specified south central Kansas (which is where I am) and specified also that it didn’t include Sedgick county or Wichita. Guess who got nailed. (Hint: It wasn’t SC Kansas.) I don’t know how they can get it so wrong, so consistently.

Not usually. I do remember occasions when it’s been so loud it’s scared me. I remember hearing a clap of thunder so loud and out of the blue it woke me from my sleep with a start. Normally I really enjoy it.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit Laughs, I got woken up in a storm one afternoon, but not by the storm. I was napping on the couch, and I woke up with our St Bernard draped all over me. She was terrified of storms. She was also 180 pounds.

I’m indifferent. Thunder is just a way the sky tells me there is going to be a big rain.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Mimishu1995 You’ve never seen thunder snow have you. It’s so beautiful. The lightning lights up the snow flakes.

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

:-) that would definitely wake you! How cute but heavy. My dogs are fine with storms (thank goodness). Neither of them is bothered by them at all.

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Really? There’s something like that? I have never seen snow, let alone thunder snow. Would really like to see one :)

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@Mimishu1995 It is spectacular. Thunder, lightning, and snow at the same time. It reflects like crazy off the flakes. The only time I’m stupid enough to stand out in lightning.

My grandma used to tell me that thunder was God moving his furniture around.
Bless, her medication really kicked in at that point XD

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe That can be a sight to die for :p

Pachy's avatar

@ucme, I giggled at your comment about God moving furniture (although if anyone could afford to hire a mover it would be Him!). My long-gone grandmother and uncles had some dandy sayings, too… which every once in a while I hear myself saying out loud.

@Pachy Grandma’s are awesome, this is the way of things.

As far as I know, I’ve always loved thunder and lightening. In my prime it didn’t get any better than thunder, lightening, down-pouring rain, a screened porch, and beer.

It’s still hard to get me out of bed if I wake to a thunderstorm.

I love it.

One of the highlight of my life was camping in a tent on Anthracite Creek during a thunderstorm! It was like the thunder and lightning were one; the flash/BOOM were simultaneous. The booming penetrated your entire body and you felt like your insides were being thrown about! During such an experience you come to realize how small, helpless and insignificant you really are.
My wife and I didn’t get much sleep because we spent most of the night taking turns sticking our heads out of the tent watching the creek rise and determining whether we needed to haul our buns to higher ground or could stay for a few more minutes!
The creek rose about two feet that night but was still in the banks so we stayed put and, while not entirely dry, warm snuggled together in our down bags.
