Just heard that Percy Sledge died. He only had one hit that I can recall, but it defined an era for me. What does it mean to you who are old enough to remember?

I mean “sleep out in the rain”?

Oh, so sad to hear this! I always thought that he really nailed the concept, whether one appreciated it as absolute devotion or just a bit of extreme door-mattitude.

Now I need to go listen.

I had a Percy Sledge session this morning and played “When a man loves a woman” while enjoying coffee with my husband.

What does ‘sleep out in the rain’ mean? I take it as meaning when a man is besotted with a woman, she can be cruel and hard to him and he’ll cop it because he wants so badly to please her. I think there’s truth in what he says and I think some partners abuse that trait in both men and women.

Gotta respect it when someone just nails a song and makes it their own for all time. It’d be hard to make a better rendition of When a Man Loves a Woman than Percy did. As an artist I’d love to have just one thing like that which would stand the test of time.
