Meta Question

Do our answers disappear from Fluther if we close our accounts?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) April 19th, 2015

I was perusing an old thread where I expected to hear the thoughts of a particular Flutherer, but they were gone.

No, but you can’t search by name.

Huh. I think a former moderator deleted its comments.

Not a big deal, I don’t dwell on meta stuff. But I lost some respect for the person.

More people change their names than you might expect. I know a bunch of times I’ve seen old threads where a familiar deleted user was sporting a different user name than I knew them by, but of course in the conversation people still referred to them by the name they had been using at the time.

You mean Fluther converted their history to a new user name?

@jaytkay When a user changes their name, that name is changed in old threads, too. So, yes, it changes Fluther history.

@longgone thank you. Looking again, I was wrong. A former moderator did not delete its comments.

The comments appear under a different name.

I don’t guess I even knew you could change your name. I thought ‘changing your name on Fluther’ meant opening a new account.

Interesting.

@ibstubro You have to get special permission from the Fluther gods to do it. Only a few people have.

Auggie once said everyone is allowed one ’‘free’’ name change, but if you want another later, you need a good reason. But yeah, either way only staff can do this.
I know Auggie´s gone, but I assume this still stands.

I changed my name a few years ago. I kept it similar enough it wasn’t confusing. Just enough to screw up Google. Funny thing is I was able to open a new account with the same user-name. Which is a bit of a shame since I think that if the name is changed the old one should be killed since it would make it easy to impersonate someone.

I think they agree on a ideological standpoint but don’t care enough to write code to make that happen.

@johnpowell I thought the fluther gods had left us to carry on as we will with just a few mods to keep us from going Lord of the Flies.
