Why aren't we (humans) more supportive of new ideas when it comes to progress?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28141points) April 26th, 2015

Is it the fear of change? Being brain-washed by marketing through various resources? Personal beliefs? Something else?

For context’s sake, I just finished watching a ‘documentary’ called Pump. It specifically addresses why alternative methods of fuel, such as ethanol and methanol are better (cheaper, more environmentally-friendly) than fossil fuels, such as gas and oil.

I understand that, strategically, it takes time to put these changes in action. The question is more about why it takes so long for people to jump on board, or worse fight it, without knowing all of the facts and considering them.

Why not invest in the time to brain-storm on the pros and cons before discrediting an idea?

People who have an interest in the status quo don’t just politely step aside to make way for a better way of doing things. Those whose livelyhoods— or cultures—revolve around the old ways have a whole lot to lose, so they’re often more motivated to fight than the advocates for change are.

Change is scary business. Maintaining control is important also, no matter what benefits may result. (Blasted think-they-know-it-all young whippersnappers!!!) People like being in a constant groove and balk mightily when change beckons.

I’d like to know as well. It’s obvious our society could be so much better.

As far as ethanol
I have concerns about it’s corrosiveness for older cars. I also have concerns that people think American ethanol is like Brazilian (Brazil uses a lot of the stuff) which it isn’t.

Otherwise, I would say in general we are resistant to change and skeptical. Look at the whole fracking situation. I’m starting to believe those new earthquakes are so to the fracking process.

I want cleaner greener fuel so badly. I want solar panels on my house and little windmills in my yard.

I bought a tankless water heater for my house. The water so so hard here I have to worry about it clogging up, I think I made a mistake.

I want to be off the grid or selling back to the grid. I hope one day I will be.

I believe that it isn’t so much the common folk who fight the change but rahter those who would lose profits if another cheaper solution existed.

I believe it is more about personalty and temperament. Some humans are innovative, creative and the old, “out of the box” types, that thrive on change and innovative progress. These would be the intuitive/ perceiving personalities. They are the types that thrive on new experiences, have inventive personalities and are idea generated.

The more traditional and conservative personalities are the sensor/judgers, they are the duty fulfillers and diehard traditionalists. In other words, progressive artists, scientists, inventors and engineers vs. postal workers, military personal, law enforcement . lol
Without progressives the world would never evolve, without traditionalists there would be no structure.
Somebody had to invent the garbage truck and somebody else had to drive it. haha
