Have you ever been unloaded on item wise?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) May 6th, 2015

Have anyone ever gave you something and felt they were going you a favor because you may have needed what they gave you, but when you examine it closer, there was some major or noticeable blemish or defect to it?
The item might function perfectly or near so, but the defect could require unsightly tape or such. I think in part the giver had in mind to kill two birds with one stone; to save a functioning item from the landfill, and to unburden them with the item and make it my problem, all the while feeling good about them. A person I know who is a flea marketer gave me a décor wicker end table. A declarative part of the wicker was badly damage, it did not take away from the use and stability of the table but it would have hurt the sale badly. I sum it up as he gave it to me because I could use it, he did not have to dump it (costing him money), and it made him feel good also. You feel or know an incident where someone unloaded an unwanted item on you under the auspice of it being a gift?

No, but I would welcome such a gift. I have no illusions that things I own will stay in perfect condition forever.

My SIL has been on a tight budget for several decades. Over the years, she’s upgraded her furnishings from used crappy furniture, to better quality used stuff, to very nice used stuff, and even some new things.

The stuff that she’s replacing goes into her garage for a garage sale, sale to an acquaintance, or a gift to a relative who could use it. We’ve gotten a half dozen things from her over the years, and they’re always crap. She talks them up; everything is always supposedly working properly, she’s doing us a favor, etc. But whatever we get from her is junk, and we eventually end up taking the stuff to the dump without getting any use from it.

I finally told my wife that we’re not taking any more of her sister’s stuff. If we really need something, we can afford to buy it.

My sister sent me a hand bag with broken zippers. Thaaaanks. It’s sitting in my closet. Oh yeah it’s faux leather.

If it was new than that means they probably needed it so they bought it. Why would they give you something new? Then that is a straight out gift. I have given people not so new stuff that was still serviceable. Some even in great shape. I hate putting things in land fills that may be repairable. Sometimes I just put them on the curb before trash day and say, free to take. Sometimes it goes. I hate dealing with good will. Sometimes they want really great condition. No dents or scratches. I tried to give a table away that had a chip on the inside of one leg and a worn stain on top. Could easily be remedied. I simply wanted a smaller table. They could’ve sold it to someone needing a table who could cover the worn stain with paint or a table cloth. And the leg part wasn’t noticeable.
Perfectly firm standing table. All they had to do was not ask a high price for it. Well I luckily found someone who had no problem taking it. She was a single mother and I gave it to her free. Even gave her the table cloths I wouldn’t be using. She was happy to be eating on a nice table instead of eating on her couch.
