What happened to the Caribbean guy at the end of "Red Red Wine"?

Asked by dxs (15160points) May 9th, 2015

I haven’t heard him on the radio in ages! Nowadays they just fade it out. It was my favorite part. Have any of you heard the Caribbean guy recently in “Red Red Wine” by UB40?

Looks like he is still making music (can’t hyperlink because Fluther hates an underscore: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astro_(UB40). You’ll have to copy/paste the link and put in the last bracket because… I don’t know why. This has never worked properly.). Sometimes even with UB40 members.

In looking this up, I discovered that Red, Red Wine is actually a Neil Diamond song. Weird!

Terence “Astro” Wilson was the trumpeter of UB40. He sings the rap at the end of the song Red, Red Wine.

He has reunited with the original UB40 members Ali Campbell and Mickey. They sound as great as ever!!
This is their new album Silhouette.

The song wasn’t a number one hit until Astro added the rap at the end of the song.

dappled_leaves Who would’ve thought it was a Neil Diamond song, right?

Thanks for answering! He seems like a cool dude. I can’t believe radio stations cut him off nowadays. They never play the ending part (where he comes on), they just fade it off. I haven’t heard the version with Astro in it in years. I didn’t know if something happened, like a copyright issue or something that made radios stop playing his rap. I miss it because it’s my favorite part.
And no kidding about it being a Neil Diamond song. At least you guys are not as bad as me when I used to think Counting Crows sang the original Big Yellow Taxi.

dxs I had the same thought about song rights. It’s possible that when Ali Campbell went solo there were issues relating to that. Ali Campbell calls himself “The Legendary Voice of UB40”....hmm, ego out of control, perhaps just a tad…Astro seems to have changed his mind since he left the group in November 2013 and rejoined in October 2014. But they sound like classic UB40 now. I decided to buy the new CD today.

Maybe the anti-alcohol league asked for an edit, to not poison us with pro-wine lyrics?

David_Achilles's avatar

Zaku Nah….the whole song is a paeon to wine…“red, red wine makes me feel so fine…” the rap at the end is just more of the same.

Yeah it’s all about red red wine.
I can’t even say I’m a fan of red red wine but it’s a great great song.
@David_Achilles Have you tried entering in an at sign (shift+2) and then typing in someone’s name? By doing this, you can hyperlink their names without having to do it manually.

Update: I heard Astro’s part in Red Red Wine yesterday on 99.1 fm on the Mass Pike. Looks like he’s still somewhere on the radio. I’ll have to gather a larger sample pool and return with more accurate results.

Update: He’s back! I’ve heard him three times in the past few months, and never the edited out version. Red red wine you make me feel so fine.
