Why can't I see the pictures on this phone?

My son brought his Apple phone to me so I could unload the pictures from the phone to the computer. I go to computer/apple phone (which shows up under the computer icon when I connect the phone) However, in the end nothing shows up. No pics, no video, nothing.

I have Windows XP. The phone is an Apple Otter.

This pop up comes up and says, “There are no pictures found on this device.” However, there are actually 383 pictures on this device, and 16 videos.
