Is this a technical glitch?

Asked by Earthbound_Misfit (13177points) June 1st, 2015

When I try to send a message, edit a post or even send a message to the mods, I get

Forbidden (403) CSRF verification failed. Request aborted.

I can’t message the mods privately to report this so I’m sending it here. I will also try to clear my cache in case it’s on my end but I’m raising a question in case it’s a technical fault.

CSRF has to do with the cookies that your browser stores. Like many sites, Fluther uses cookies to verify that the user is logged in properly. If I understand it correctly, this error means that the cookie given by your web browser was not trusted by the website.

I would recommend clearing your cookies and cache as a first step. You may or may not want to clear all of your cookies, as this would also erase the cookies of all other websites (and thus log you out of all websites). Depending on what browser you are using, there may be a way to only clear Fluther’s cookies.

If, for some reason, the error persists, try checking out the extensions running on your browser. After all, CSRF verification exists to prevent malicious browsers from attacking the site. (Chances are, you won’t have any malicious extensions, but double-checking is always good).

If the error still persists, then it may be a problem with the website itself, although I don’t believe this problem has been replicated yet with any other users.
