Whatever happened to brass knuckles?

Asked by Aster (20023points) June 14th, 2015

All grandmothers want to know: why do you never hear about them or see them on tv? I always had the impression they were immoral or sinful or something like putting a rock in a snowball.
Are they still being used ? Or have they been outlawed?

Here’s the pertinent part of the law in Illinois:

Unlawful Use of Weapons
(a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he knowingly:
(1) Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses or carries any bludgeon, black-jack, slung-shot, sand-club, sand-bag, metal knuckles or other knuckle weapon regardless of its composition...

It’s a Class A misdemeanor, meaning the maximum sentence is less than one year imprisonment and a $2,500 fine.

If you see ”” in my answer above, that’s just Fluther being glitchy.

It was supposed to be bold text:
metal knuckles or other knuckle weapon regardless of its composition

When brass knuckles are outlawed, only outlaws will have brass knuckles…

How come the NRA (or similar group) isn’t fighting for the right to own and use brass knuckles?

Why do grandmothers, specifically, want to know this?

They evolved into this

I got one for my girlfriend and her sister.
I have something similar in my car.

They went out of fashion, along with the others on the list that @jaytkay mentioned above, due to the upfront, in your face, personal space-invading commitment necessary to use them effectively. In other words, they require a certain amount of guts to use in a fair fight.

They were replaced, of course, by the indiscriminate and impersonal use of firearms by pussies.

I agree that they are glaringly obsolete in view of the ongoing impersonalization of death and maiming made possible by our glut of firearms and their ever increasing availability.

They were replaced by cheap firearms.

I think they’re with all the anvils.

You know… at one time they were so ubiquitous that they featured in children’s cartoons… they’re the thing you use to melt down other metals… so where’d they all go? I guess they’re in a heap with discarded brass knuckles.

They’re on Ebay!

@Aster Are you bidding on brass knuckles?! This question is fascinating.

Aster's avatar

Thanks @fluthernutter. Kidding in what way?

bossob's avatar

@Aster On my monitor it looks like @fluthernutter said ‘bidding’ and not ‘kidding’.

Oh , you’re right. lol No; I am not bidding on them. HA!
