After abortion question?

Asked by morelo (15points) June 22nd, 2015

My last period ended on March 28th and a month later I found out I was pregnant, so I went and took an abortion pill on may 9th. At the time I was about 5 weeks pregnant. I was bleeding for about two weeks after taking the abortion pill. Now its been a month since I took the pill and the home pregnancy test shows that I am still pregnant. I just need advice on this from women who might have gone through the same thing. I am really NERVOUS because I know I cannot carry this pregnancy. I am wondering if this is the same pregnancy. Me and my boyfriend did have sex but we used protection.

You have to go to the doctor and get checked.

There’s no way for us to know @morelo. It’s too important for you to risk incorrect information. Go and see your doctor.

This is a question for a doctor. I’ve never been in this situation, but if I ever was, I’d be going right to my doctor.

As far as I know, the so called morning after pill only works in the day or two after you have had un-protected sex, before the egg has implanted into the uterus. It’s likely that you took the pill after you were already pregnant and the egg had already implanted. You should definitely go to a doctor, tomorrow if possible, to find out what your options are regarding getting an abortion.

Do you have a Planned Parenthood chapter near you, or within driving distance? They can give you the assistance and support that you need without putting a guilt trip on you. They can give you a run-down of all of the options available to you.

Good luck, dear.

^^She didn’t say she took a morning after pill. She took an abortion pill.

@JLeslie I’ve never heard of an abortion pill, per se. I’ve heard of a Morning After Pill that has been referred to as an abortion pill by the fundamentalist Christians, who believe that that kind of contraception is the same thing as an abortion. Is there another type of pill that is actually causes an abortion?

@Kardamom there are two different sorts. http://www.choiceandhealth.com/whatisthedifference.htm

And, they don’t always work.

@cazzie Thanks for the info.

@Kardamom I see @Cazzie already gave a link. A lot of it has to do with timing. The morning after pill is right after you have sex. The abortion pill is when you already know you are pregnant. You can only use it up to a certain amount of weeks pregnant. I don’t remember the exact number, but I think it is up to 5 weeks from a missed period. A surgical abortion you have to wait a certain amount of weeks pregnant before they will do one. I don’t remember how many.

Some people don’t like the idea of taking the pills so they wait to do a regular abortion. Some people want to abort as soon as they find out they are pregnant and so they take the abortion pill.

Everyone is different, and each type of pill, or procedure, works in different stages of pregnancy.

I took cytotec about 5 weeks back and that is an abortion pill.

@morelo didn’t you have a follow up with your clinic? Didn’t you experience all the cramping and bleeding afterward?

morelo's avatar

I did experience bleeding for about two weeks. And I was out of town so my follow up is this coming weekend. I just wanted to know what are the chances of a continuing pregnancy after taking the pill

At this point it doesn’t matter. If you are pregnant and don’t want to be go to a clinic and get an abortion. You have no other option.

cazzie's avatar

Go to your clinic or even call them ahead of time and tell them you took a test and it was positive. They can book you for an aspiration or d&c, depending on how they do it these days.

It’s possible not all of the pregnancy tissue was expelled, which would mean pregnancy hormones would still be creating a positive pregnancy test. Or, you got pregnant again, or the pills didn’t work.

The doctor has to evaluate it.

Let us know what happens.

I will definitely keep you updated. Thank you for all the suggestions and help. I really appreciate it.

Also, I already talked to the clinic as well. They will check it on Saturday
