And do women automatically come to mind, or men, or both?

Anyone who loses their head when the chips are down. And neither sex comes to mind when I think about it.

Today’s definition is simply being overwhelmed by emotion.

But there’s a reason women are associated with it. For over 2000 years, up until the late 19th century, it has been considered a mental disorder specifically ascribed to women. It used to be treated with vibrators!

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with instinctively associating it with women.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I think because when women scream it’s high pitched, and that leads to panic more than lower pitches, I think.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@keobooks Well I can see why it’s associated with women. Get hysterical, get an orgasm. I think men should have figured it out long before now. ~

^^^ As your sister I can say this freely, and you will know that I still love you….............YOU MORON!!!

That’s why I went back and added the tilde. Someone might take me serious. Butthead.

Some stereotypes are tough to ditch. Like the one about women an EEEEK! a mouse!

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I read once that when women were required to wear long skirts, the mice would run up their skirts! So if they saw a mouse they’d jump on a table or something and scream. The eeeek part is just left over from that.
I EEEEK when I see a cockroach. Shudder. I have no qualms about murdering a cockroach. Spiders, for the most part, are fine. But not cockroaches.

Irrational ranting, raving, being overly physically expressive. Emoting theatrically.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh, God. Those high pitched voices and screams drive me absolutely bat shit crazy.

Yeah and all over her cell phone crapping out, and people still say they are not addicted to their phones , yeah right.

An emotional response that is inappropriately intense in the context of the trigger.

The word comes from the Greek, meaning uterus. So that gives everybody a clue

I am not a social scientist or psychologist so my thoughts on this issue are mine alone based on experience. I will defer to science if I am wrong.

But my experience is that women are more prone to hysterical responses than men.

So shoot me. Or try to anyway.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I agree, for the most part, and hysterical woman annoy me. However, men can be hysterical too, but it comes off as more….violent and angry, I think.

Female related. Usually the b#@$* has no other way of handling issues and resorts to histrionic behavior.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I know, right? What is the point? I became hysterical, for the first time in my life, about a month ago. I just lost control of my mind, from fear, for a few minutes. But I never screamed.

I always associate the word with something that’s incredibly funny, but that’s just me being positive.
