What about some so-called myths, are they myth or fact?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) July 21st, 2015

There are a lot of things said about a good number of things. It seems if they are said long enough it gets taken as fact. Let’s take a look at some of them and you tell me, myth or fact?

• Chocolate will cause you acne: (truth or myth?)
• On a hot day, you will get better mileage on the freeway rolling down the window and avoid using the A/C: (truth or myth?)
• If you have a healthy usual working metabolism (since some believe there is no ‘normal’) you can eat anything you want so long as you burn up the calories you take in: (truth or myth?)
• Crime always increases during full moons: (truth or myth?)
• Coffee with a good shot of some hot sauce will sober you right up: (truth or myth?)
• Mayonnaise will go bad once you open it if you do not refrigerate it: (truth or myth?)

Here are my answers:

• Chocolate will cause you acne: (truth or myth?) Myth

• On a hot day, you will get better mileage on the freeway rolling down the window and avoid using the A/C: (truth or myth?) truth

• If you have a healthy usual working metabolism (since some believe there is no ‘normal’) you can eat anything you want so long as you burn up the calories you take in: (truth or myth?) Depends if you are only worried about weight, or also worried about health. If all you care about is weight then it’s true

• Crime always increases during full moons: (truth or myth?) Always is a strong word. There have been studies showing a rise in crime during the full moon.

• Coffee with a good shot of some hot sauce will sober you right up: (truth or myth?) myth

• Mayonnaise will go bad once you open it if you do not refrigerate it: (truth or myth?) true, but not as fast as some people might think. The high fat content keeps it good for a while. I never would risk it though.

A/C vs. open windows: conditional

According to a SAE experiment fuel mileage depends on speed and vehicle type. Open windows can create significant drag at high speeds.

EPA recommendations :

What can I do to improve my fuel economy in hot weather?

Roll the windows down at lower speeds; use the AC at highway speeds.”

1) Sugar in the gas tank will ruin your engine. Happily, this is false

2) Is a “sugar high” a truth or a myth? As I have long suspected, it’s a myth..
Often some sort of celebration or event involves eating sugar in the form of cake, cup cakes, etc., and it’s the excitement of the celebration that cause kids to get hyper, not the sugar. Think Christmas and Halloween.

If you’re sensitive to chocolate (allergic), it WILL cause you to have acne. My daughter’s skin has vastly improved since she stopped eating it.

I heard that the car AC thing is only true with older model cars. The newer ones don’t work the same way.

Crime doesn’t increase on full moons. And even if it did, there is so much crime everywhere all the time that it would barely make a difference.

Myth or truth; it always rains during a funeral lol.

@Symbeline Myth or truth; it always rains during a funeral Statistically: no, I’m sure there have been funerals where it has not rained. Experientially: yes. It seems there has been at least a sprinkle at every funeral I have attended!

In movies, it almost always rains when they show a funeral. Incidentally, both funerals I’ve been at had perfect, sunny weather.
