What's up with the hashtags on posts not affiliated with Twitter?

Asked by Pied_Pfeffer (28141points) August 1st, 2015

I’m not a member of Twitter, so the # sign that shows up on Facebook posts and occasionally on Fluther allude me. Do they somehow connect the two or is it just out of habit for Tweeters?

Time for a science experiment – you can prove it empirically.

I’m going to do a hash tag for a madeup word – #peanutbuttermustardolives

@peanutputtermustardolives

it is 4pm ET.

See how long it takes (if ever) for this to picked up by Twitter.

@elbanditoroso LOL, I’m not creating a Twitter account to find out. I’ll assume by the response that there is no connection and that it is habit or something else that has people using the hashtag on sites other than Twitter where there may be no connection. But what about on news reports or blogs? Are they somehow linked to Twitter?

By the way, you chose three foods that I love. Just not together.

@Pied_Pfeffer – ask yourself—how did I know that you liked these foods?

@ucme I hate love you.

@elbanditoroso We have been psychologically connected since we both joined Fluther. Maybe even before that. It has nothing to do with hashtags.

@Pied_Pfeffer…and I fucking despise like you a little bit too.

@ucme At the risk of embarrassing you, you just melted my heart. Thank you for making my day.

I agree that it’s some kind of habits of Tweeters. Actually I don’t use Twitter myself, but I get the idea from seeing posts on Twitter as a lurker and Facebook posts by the same users. Even those who don’t use Twitter seem to be affected and use it in their Facebook post too.

Not to mention the statements after # aren’t always English.

Facebook said a few years back that it would collate hashtags for trending topics. But it hasn’t caught on there as it did on twitter.

The very cool even use hashtags in spoken language. See this.

I wouldn’t say “habit” – I think it’s mostly done either by people who are striving to appear young, or by those making fun of that group.
