Do you have fun on a daily basis? What are some things you do that you consider fun?

Asked by jca (36062points) August 25th, 2015

Today, watching a television morning show, they cited some statistics that 68% of men and 34% of women say they have fun on a daily basis. I’m not really listening carefully so I missed part of what they were saying.

It got me thinking about what I do that I consider fun, and how the definition of “fun” is probably very different for different people. Maybe sports like biking or rock climbing, going to the beach or pool is fun, or participating in hobbies like crafts or cooking. To some, going to eat or drink with friends may be fun. Traveling may be fun. Maybe, something really simple may be fun, like playing with your children or joking with friends.

I don’t think my typical work day consists of fun. It’s stressful doing the morning commute, the evening commute (about 45 minutes each way – 40 miles), and then picking up my daughter and cooking for her, doing laundry, getting her into the shower and then ready for bed (she’s elementary school age, so this involves a lot of supervision). For me, something enjoyable may consist of relaxing, but I don’t have a lot of time like that and I don’t necessarily consider that “fun.”

What’s fun for you and do you have “fun” on a daily basis?

My definition of ‘fun’ changes hour-to-hour or day-to-day. Yesterday, for example, I sat down with a new book by one of my favorite authors and read for two hours – that was great fun.

They day before I went to the park with the grandkids. That was a lot of fun.

Sometimes just sitting and watching an old movie is fun.

So, yes, I try and do something ‘fun’ all the time, but the definition changes.

On a day to day type thing not much, I do enjoy golfing, but that is only once or twice a week in season,I really enjoy slow times with Mrs squeeky, most times we are just rushing here and there.

Daily would be an exaggeration for me, but almost daily I try to squeeze in things I enjoy and even consider fun. Watching a favorite TV show, going to the pool, eating at a favorite restaurant, playing for a few minutes with my boss’ kids, telling something funny to my husband, all sorts of little things all of the time.

Yeah, mostly. I’m a light-hearted person, so I can find fun in almost everything. Things that I consider fun are reading, watching movies, listening to music, learning something new… I don’t usually have time for reading and watchinh movies, but I can listen to music and learn new things (aka researching) everyday.

I can find fun at school too. Well, not very often, but at least I can do something to cool the stress. Cracking jokes with friends about the lessons for example can be entertaining.

I am in the @Mimishu1995 camp. Finding joy and fun in daily life eases the mind and raises my spirits.

@jca you describe stuff in your daily life which are inherently fun if done with pleasure: picking up your daughter, cooking, getting her ready for bed. And yes, commutes can be stressful, but they are also a time to enjoy music, or listen to a book-on-tape.

The secret is to not do things that add to your stress or block you fun, like listening to talk radio or worrying about things that keep you from being present with your daughter,

No fun whatsoever. On the contrary life is an unbearable drag which I try to handle by realizing it could be even worse. Just the love between me and those around me gives meaning to my dull existence.

My definition of fun is anything I enjoy doing. Teaching music is fun for me, so when school is in session, I have fun doing that every day. I enjoy spending time with my loved ones, so we have some fun together every day, at dinner, or for a little while afterwards.

longgone's avatar

Most days. I have a lot of fun with my sisters and close friends, as well as the dogs and my extended family. Cooking can be fun, and music will make even cleaning fun.

For me, “fun” includes a certain level of activity. I wouldn’t describe a bath or reading as fun, though I definitely enjoy both. I would call them “enjoyable” or “relaxing”.

rojo's avatar

I consider sex fun and enjoy it whenever I can but, no, it is not a daily activity.

For the most part the fun comes (no pun intended) from my state of mind during whatever I am doing. It is fun to participate in Fluther discussions; fun to prepare a meal; fun to read, bathe, walk, talk with my wife, fun to make it all work out at work.
But, there are those days when none of that is fun and sleeping in my own bed being left alone is all I want.

DoNotKnow's avatar

Good question. I’m not sure I use the word “fun” (or at least not enough). There are certainly activities that I enjoy, however. There are so many. But I’ll try to go back over the past few days and recall some “fun” or pleasant experiences: making pizza with my daughter, going for a walk with my dog, using magnifying glasses to burn leaves with my kids, walking in the woods, playing guitar, playing basketball with my kids, reading, communicating via email with a couple of old friends, sitting and talking with my family, visiting with my niece and getting a contact high from her boundless enthusiasm, cleaning the house, playing board games with my kids, going to the pool with my family, walking during lunch and listening to podcasts.

you know, @DoNotKnow, you bring up an interesting point. Looking back I think the only time I use the word “fun” any more is in a sarcastic manner after some minor catastrophe; as in “Gee, that was fun.”
It is like the concept of fun is a childish one that we grow out of and now that we are older we ‘enjoy’, or ‘take pleasure in’ or find ‘entertaining’ or ‘amusing’. Ah to be a kid again…

Yes, though my life has been much more serious the last few years due to being tanked by this economy. I LOVE to go out and play with people in public, chat up strangers, crack jokes, entertain people. I have a lot of fun playing with others. I also find fluther fun, a great outlet for my type of personality. I find going to the movies fun, getting together with a friend or my daughter fun and I love thinking and fantasizing about decorating and designing a house great fun.

I’m a kid at heart and a lover of knowledge so researching anything is fun for me to.
I also have great fun playing with my 2 cats, last night we had a laser pointer race around the house in the dark. Great fun for all! haha

Going home from work. That short 5 minute drive is fun. It’s peaceful. Sometimes I even pull over and just hang out for a bit.

I usually commute by bicycle when it’s not raining the temperature is above 30 F. I get a little mini-adventure even on work days. That’s very fun for me.

At this time of year I often take a 20 minute lakefront detour to see the beaches and the skyline.

But even in the “worst” weather I have a great time biking. It’s always a disappointment on the days I have to drive instead.

No; haven’t had fun in ten years. Before we moved from Arkansas I loved watching deer in our yard or nibbling on our driveway shrubbery or being with my grandson in the snow. I even enjoyed the mall there because it was carpeted and thus so quiet. But after relocating to Texas I have no deer, no snow, no grandson and the mall is huge and very noisy so I never go there. I might, just might have a slight amount of fun reading a great book. I also like watching new “My Grandmother’s Ravioli” with Mo Rocca. Love that guy. My life here is predictable and dull . And sprinkled with doctor’s visits which really sucks. His doctors; not mine.

My job. I am in the rare position at this odd point in my life that I finally found a job that gives me joy and fun, pretty much every day. Currently, I’m working with 14 (yes, fourteen) one-year-olds. I cherish every smile, every laugh, every wobbly first step and yes, even the tears I wipe away and the snot that ends up in the tissue and not on their tongue. We dance. We clap. We make incredible messes when we eat. We spill. We fill diapers with poop and then change them patiently. We learn how to go down the slide all by ourselves, and that makes us very happy. We watch planes fly overhead and tractors work in the field next door. We watch the cows eat the grass in the field, too. We love playing in the sandbox. Today, we laughed and laughed when Cazzie brought out puppets and they started singing and talking to each other. When the snow comes, we love building things like little snow men or making snow angels. Yes, I think I can say I have fun almost every day. Then, I get to come home to my amazing little guy and he tells me how much fun he had at school.

@cazzie Who changes your diaper? lol You said “we”. haha

A good song, a decent meal/ movie/ karaoke night with friends, a good movie/TV show, interesting youtube videos, and Fluther :b

I think of fun as more of an attitude than an activity. So, naturally, I’m almost always having fun. :P

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

Fun can be as simple as taking the time to have a pleasant and lighthearted conversation with a friend or family member. It can mean participating in some enjoyable activity such as watching a film. Given this is how I define fun, I definitely have fun every day.

Aster's avatar

@Earthbound_Misfit if all this is fun enough to be called “fun” then I’m having fun each day! Thank you.

I have not yet read any of the other responses, will do so after posting.

I’m one of those people who is not easily bored and I try to find as much fun in a day as I can.

I really like a lot of the people I work with and actually look forward to seeing them. I socialize with a few of them outside of work too, so that’s fun.

Of course, Fluthering is fun.

Cooking is often fun, not always, sometimes it’s just run of the mill let’s get something to eat, but other times I’m experimenting with recipes, like yesterday, so that is fun. I also like to photograph my culinary creations, so that’s fun, at least for me. I don’t think most people would find that fun.

I love to read and I read every day, so that is fun.

In any given week, I take lots of photographs. I love taking photographs, I even like sorting and organizing them and putting the choice ones on Facebook, although I don’t do that quite as often as some people do.

I talk to, visit, or text or PM about 4 friends on a regular basis. That is usually fun.

I spend a lot of time with dogs and cats that I take care of on a regular basis. That is one of the biggest joys of my life.

My mom and I usually have a series that we binge watch, 2 or 3 episodes each evening, while my dad is watching The Big Bang Theory re-runs (which I find very enjoyable too, bazinga!). Right now my mom and I are watching The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries series. I can’t get enough of that. I highly recommend that series.

I like to look at Pinterest. I find that very fun.

I helped a friend clean out her father’s garage a few days ago. He passed away and she and her siblings inherited his home. We spent all day going through stuff to be hauled away to the Goodwill, the dump, or the recycling. I had a lot of fun, because I actually enjoy organizing and cleaning (as long as it’s other people’s stuff) and I got to hang out with my friend.

I often get together with one particular friend to go walking, usually at the beach. That is always fun.

Believe it or not, I actually enjoy milling around in Target and Trader Joe’s whether or not I actually need to buy anything. It’s always so hot here, that I just put my purse in a cart and roam around looking at things, getting ideas for birthday gifts, or meal planning. I can easily spend 2 hours in either one of those stores.

I enjoy talking to and visiting with my neighbors. Most of them have dogs or cats, and even the ones that don’t, are nice folks. We’re a pretty friendly lot.

I’m probably considered boring, or at least my life is, to a lot of people, but I rarely get bored and I think I have a fair amount of fun. At least I try to, and I try to help my friends and loved ones have a nice time, even if it isn’t anything huge, like skydiving or going to Disneyland. Sometimes the most joy comes out of every day niceties.

There’s so much crap and bullshit and horror in the world, sometimes the only thing you can do is try to make a nice, simple life for yourself and your loved ones inside your small bubble of an existence. The alternative is unthinkable.

The definition of fun on my WebWord app is “Activities that are enjoyable or amusing”. To me fun can be as simple as enjoying a great conversation with a friend. It’s time out that’s relaxing and makes me smile and laugh. It might be going for a walk along the beach and enjoying seeing people playing with their dogs or kids.

A couple of the most fun things I remember from my recent overseas trip were looking out of the window and seeing a red squirrel bounding across the grassed area below. We don’t have squirrels where I live and it was a moment of absolute delight. Similarly, when we visited Plymouth, we were walking around the boat docks and a man came along with his golden retriever and started throwing the ball into the water. The dog leapt into the water to retrieve it and was having such fun. Again, we shared his joyful enthusiasm. We did lots of things, but simple interactions with other people and animals are often the things I enjoy most.
