When's the last time you heard a song for the first time and thought it was incredible?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) September 6th, 2015

I listened to Elvis Costello’s My Aim is True for the first time last week, and the song Watching the Detectives has already made it on my list of favorite songs of all time.

Cold Play’s “Fix You” about two years ago.

About a month ago I heard this song by Pitbull. Normally I’m not a big fan of him, but this song was about the world and the people in it and I just about fell in love with it!

I think it’s a couple of years ago when I heard Hey Brother for the first time.

@JLeslie Is that the song by Aloe Blacc? Or by Avicii?

I’ll never forget this experience. It was the ‘80s. I was in L.A. on my way to catch a plane home when heard a piece of music on the radio that totally knocked me out. I pulled over to the shoulder to listen. Much to my horror, the DJ didn’t give the name of either the song or artist, so I spent the next year trying to find out (this was before the Internet made it so easy). I finally did. I was Pat Metheny’s “Are you Going With Me?” and I love it to this day.

@rockfan The first time I heard (or heard of!) Elvis Costello was a live performance on Saturday Night Live and it WAS incredible.

It was 1977 and My Aim is True was a new release.

I was transfixed. This gawky guy with a little four-piece band playing stripped-down rock was such a relief from the overwrought prog-rock and cliche guitar bands of the day.

My Aim is True is still one of my favorite albums.

Much more recently, I was really smitten with Tune-Yards, especially when I saw a live video and saw that Merrill Garbus was sampling herself right on stage and looping it to create a little orchestra. Link

Also, I’d never listened to Fiona Apple until a few months ago. I was pretty blown away by her album Tidal and the more recent The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than The Driver Of The Screw And Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.

Heard Run a few days ago and had to instantly buy it from iTunes.

Here’s another one.

Bombino is a North African guitarist who grew up watching Jimi Hendrix videos.

@jatay Love the Tune-Yards as well!

I’ve listened to (and loved) Tidal and When the Pawn, The Idler Wheel is definitely going to be my next record purchase.

I don’t know the last time, but I can remember the first times.

The Beatles had just released Hey Jude – the long version, that didn’t play on AM radio – only FM radio. I would guess 1968 or so.

I loved that the chorus went on for 7–8 minutes…

Another one that caught me and I loved it immediately was the long version (again) of Layla, by Eric Clapton (Derek and the Dominos) – again, there’s that chord shift and the song goes on for another 7 minutes.

Classics.

So happy you like it, @rockfan!

I don’t listen to Pop music, so Happy and Haven’t Met You Yet probably most recently. I couldn’t get enough of Jason Mraz’s Curbside Prophet when it came out.

I primarily listen to NPR and Country, so it’s a treat when I hear music that’s joyful.

My neighbors were having a loud party with a live band yesterday. I was a little annoyed at first but from the music it became obvious it was a quinceanera.

30 kids singing Pharrell’s Happy will make any grinch’s heart grow three sizes.

About two years ago, Human by The Killers. Absolutely moving emotionally yet gets you to dance no matter what you are doing.
