Where can I find an authentic, military issue boonie hat?

Asked by LeavesNoTrace (5674points) September 10th, 2015

My boyfriend has been searching high and low for an authentic military issue Boonie hat like the one he had as a ROTC cadet.

Every time we pass by a military/sporting goods store he ducks in to look for one and always walks out empty handed because he says that their versions are not “the real deal”.

I’d love to surprise him for our first anniversary with one of these elusive items. but I have no idea what I’m looking for! I’ve done some quick Googling and found this one in the “chocolate chip” pattern he mentioned to the last store clerk.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MIL-SPEC-CHOCOLATE-CHIP-6-COLOR-DESERT-CAMO-BOONIE-SUN-HAT-SIZE-7-1-4-U-S-MADE-/291553108721

Could this be what he wants? If not, can someone suggest a better version?

Try adding BDU to your search terms and you may have more luck.

Your best bet is probably a military surplus store. Otherwise, you are going to be hard pressed to find anything other than imitations.

Aside from adding BDU, add cover hat to your search terms.

I see the ones linked are made in China. I’m thinking maybe some Jellies can help by searching in their local army surplus stores (if there are any).

Perhaps on eBay, if you wanted an original??? If you use the listing for eBay above and aren’t sure, look at who the Seller is. Some may be actual stores for surplus items or the Seller is more of a private listing, they still might have ideas for you. Contact is available under Ask The Seller A Question. I would contact before a purchase to verify, or ask to see additional pix.
I so hope that you find it!
Good luck!
