Asked by talljasperman (21916points) October 5th, 2015

Is it leonard Nimoy with the nerd coming from his first name ? In the 60s. Being logical and obsessed with math. What decade did the insult come from?

Perhaps from nerd, a creature in the children’s book If I Ran the Zoo (1950) by Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel)
First Known Use: 1951

^^ Correct. But it has become…

A stereotypical label used to describe a person that is socially inadequate. A four letter word, but a six figure income

A person who gains pleasure from amassing large quantities of knowledge about subjects often too detailed or complicated for most other people to be bothered with.

Often mistaken for Geeks, who aspire to become nerds, yet lack the intelligence, and end up giving nerds a bad name due to their poor hygiene and social skills.

Non-nerds are often scared of nerds, due to their detailed knowledge, and therefore seemingly high levels of intelligence – and subsequently denegrate them as much as possible as often as possible.

Nerds exist covertly within the fabric of society, often choosing to ‘nerd it up’ in private or in the company of fellow nerds. It is for this reason they are feared the most – unlike geeks, who are easily identified, nerds can only be found out when casual conversation reaches a subject that they like nerding.

@Espiritus_I do not see how the OP has asked where Nerd originated from morphed into where into where “it has become” as you steered it towards since the question the OP asked was pretty clear on the answers it was seeking

Nerd came into usage as @Espiritus_Corvus describes it from its association with “Nintendo European Research & Development”, a software development company responsible for many of those early computer games. Those supersmart guys associated with this company that designed and implemented the technology were known as NERDS to other competitors and eventually it came to be applied to all who had a vast repertoire of somewhat useless and esoteric knowledge.

or maybe is was in association with the term NonErosive Reflux Disease because the way they seemed to know everything gave us all heartburn, nausea and caused that little bit of vomit to form in the back of your mouth.

I can’t remember which.
