When is it time to wear a dress, and when is it time for wearing pants?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) October 18th, 2015

Sure, there are obvious times where women will choose wearing pants over dresses or skirt, and vice versa, such as up on a ladder on a breezy day cleaning the gutters, I can see pants. Going to the club, I can see that dress being worn, or going off road with a dirt bike, pants. However if there are times when physical activity or location serves no need or detriment, in those cases, what determines the choice of pants over dress or dress over pants? Simple style, temperature, functions, etc.?

My mood. If I wake in the morning and go… “I feel like wearing those pants and that top” or if I wake and go “I feel like wearing that pretty dress”. That’s about the gist of it. These days you can wear pants or a dress to a formal meeting, so the functions I have to attend won’t influence my choice of dress or pants.

Comfort, mostly.

If I’m headed to the beach, I’ll normally wear a breezy skirt. If I’m going to do almost anything else, it’s pants.

I was forced to wear skirts every day for many years, so now I wear them rarely – more often in costume than anything else (and then I’m still wearing yoga pants underneath for comfort’s sake).

i usually put on my sarong about 8 or 9 pm. It is mostly pants until that point. Unless it is the weekend, then it is the sarong until I have to go out.

Comfort, warmth, or fashion usually.

You can wear slacks to almost anything now. Some religions frown on pants for women, so the women in those groups might always opt for skirts or dresses for religious reasons, or at least while in church.

Having big thighs can make skirts uncomfortable, especially with naked legs. It can even cause infections or chaffing on the skin where the thighs touch.

Along with the fashion idea, some body types are easier to fit in skirts than pants and vice versa.

In my opinion, no one should question why a woman chooses to wear a skirt or pants, and men especially need to shut the hell up and get a grip if they pester their SO to wear skirts. Slacks are much easier, and more comfortable and practical for many women in many situations, and for many different reasons. Sometimes skirts and dresses are more comfortable.

When the dress is worn by a thirsty dog?

Shoes. It all depends on what I’m doing and how comfortable my feet need to be.

For me, it’s almost never time for a dress. I just don’t like them. I will tolerate a dress for a wedding or a formal occasion.

It’s always time for a skirt, for me. I love them. They’re so breezy.

By that defensive tone, I can take it you or more of a slacks woman? It is not about pestering a woman to wear a skirt., functionally there are times when only pants will do, but other times are optional, I was just curious about how the optional times got decided. Guys have optional choice of facial hair or not. Some guys I know choose to wear a beard because they want to minimize the effect of a double chin or weak chin or even cover a scar on their chin or jaw, others just do so because they like the look. As far as apparel men doesn’t have an equivalent near dramatic as between a skirt/dress/mini and pants. Does it always have to dribble into control men try to exert on women?

I wear dresses and skirts when I “dress up.” I wear skirts and/or dresses maybe 20% of the time for casual.

Taking that further, you are going out to the mall what makes you choose a skirt over pants, weather, wind, shoes you are wearing, going along or with a friend wearing a skirt, etc.?

I wear pants almost all the time, even to occasions such as holiday parties or weddings. I feel like I look better in pants (usually dark jeans for my typical work day or weekend) and they’re more comfortable and practical.

Are we eleven? who coordinates outfits with friends before going to the mall?

I wear a skirt sometimes because my husband likes it. Also, when I gained weight I still had skirts that fit, while my pants were getting too tight on my thighs. I also might pick a skirt over slacks for dinner out, just a fashion thing. Generally, pants are more comfortable and practical.

@Seek Ok how did you do that? Come up with a name that will not let me highlight it It is not really coordinating, we all wear a t-shirt and shorts during the summer. In the winter it is a t-shirt and jeans. Ah….Texas!

@JLeslie file these under things I have never said:

“Are you going out in that?”
“A skirt would be much more appropriate don’t you think?”
“Pants? Really?”

@Hypocrisy_Central I wear a beard because I fear Chin Erosion and the beard helps make sure that I don’t suffer from it. When I rub my chin and say “Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm” Which I do frequently, especially here on Fluther the hair keeps me from eroding my chin underneath. I know, I could just have a goatee but, as my wife says “You are NOT going out like that!”
