My wife is a dietitian and recommends the supplements listed below for me. Also 6 cardiologists have OK’d them for me to take. I take them in the morning (except melatonin) with two 16 oz glasses of water.

I’ve been taking them for over 20 years. My wife knows a lot about all of the supplements. She reads research studies on them. The beta sitosterol is the only one that I researched.

I’m 64 years old and feel terrific most of the time. I’m very active and exercise every day. Also regularly compete in canoe paddling competition.

Multivitamin, and whey on the days I work out.

Oh I forgot to indicate that I take 70 grams of whey protein every morning in nonfat milk. My wife’s orders. She watches everything that I eat.

I take vitamin D. I was tested and my levels were low. My doctor told me to take that. I also take magnesium. I can’t remember if she told me to take that. I usually take fish oil too, but we ran out and forgot to get some more.

D3. I’m deficient and can’t seem to get my numbers up. I just learned that people with hypothyroidism tend to be deficient in D, though, so now that I’m medicated for my hypo, I’m hoping that my D will slowly start to rise.

If I remember I take some extra vit Bs. Vitamins in pill form just gives you expensive poo.

I try to take a multi-vitamin when I remember. Sometimes I don’t remember for months and then hear it from the doctor, sometimes I’m better about it. Lately I’ve been better about it. My levels are always low because of weight loss surgery, so I need to take something that supplements a bunch of things.

I take vitamin D2 50,000 IU once a week and an additional 5,000 IU of D3 twice a week. I take the D because it’s how I keep my vitamin D level up in normal range and keep my muscle weakness and pain to a minimum.

I take about 65 mg of iron daily. I take the iron to keep my iron in normal range, and so I don’t feel exhausted and weak. Sometimes I skip 2–3 days if I’m having negative side effects. Sometimes when I get low in iron I take double that amount for a few weeks.

I take vitamin B12 liquid. The liquid has some additional B’s in there, but not in large quantities like the B12. I take the B12 to stay well into the American normal range. I am at the border of normal for some countries, and without the supplement I go into the grey area of low even by the American standard.

I take biotin off and on for my hair and nails. I’m very sporadic about it.

I take magnesium off and on for muscles. My doctor wants me to take it. I sometimes use magnesium spray instead directly on where I hurt. I probably take it about twice a week, sometimes I skip weeks altogether.

I take a regular multivitamin 3–5 times a week. I’m very inconsistent with it. So that gives me some additional D, B12, and iron, plus the other stuff in there.

@DrasticDreamer I used to hope my higher D levels would help my hypothyroidism. Interesting that you thought about it from the opposite direction. The D didn’t help my thyroid, so I was wrong about that for myself.

I take a multi vitamin with Omega 3’s, Vitamin D and Vitamin C. I have to ask myself though, am I only doing it as an excuse to eat candy since they’re gummy vitamins?

JLeslie's avatar

Lol. Sometimes I think my Flintstone vitamin and liquid B12 satisfy a sweet craving.

Vitamin D, prescribed by my doctor after my last annual physical. And thanks for reminding me that I forgot to take it this morning.

Just a multi-vitamin for 50 and over. A generic brand.
I have Vit. D to but I never take it. haha
I eat pretty healthily, and think tons of supplements are a waste of money most of the time.

None at all. I don’t believe that they do much good.

Maybe I should do an experiment on myself. I’ve been having aches and pains in my feet. I’ve had this long enough that I don’t think it’s going away by itself. So I should research what might help and see if it does.

JLeslie's avatar

@Stinley Go get a blood test for Vitamin D regarding your aches and pains. I bet you are deficient. I say don’t guess, find out. Don’t pay for and pop supplements just because. Let’s say you are deficient and never get the test, and let’s say you take 1,000 IU’s of vitamin D a day. You might decide the D does nothing, but the problem is if you aren’t taking enough to get your D in the normal range then you don’t know. It’s like taking a baby aspirin for an adult with a fever of 103, it just won’t be enough medicine to make a dent. Maybe you don’t need D, maybe you don’t need more than 1000 a day. You cannot know without the blood test.

Also, I recommend trying magnesium spray on your feet. Don’t overdo, it’s absorbed pretty well, and you can get too much magnesium. Just a few sprays three times a week helps my husband, and increasing his D. His feet never hurt until his D went below normal. We can’t be sure that’s the main problem, but I think it’s at least part of the reason. He used to get much more sun, and his as was always well within normal back then.

I drink Aloe Vera daily. My grandmother has always sworn by it and I used to make fun of her obsession with it but I eventually did some research for it based on someone else’s recommendation and realised that its benefits are vast. I’m a convert but don’t tell my Nan!

Earthbound_Misfit's avatar

What does Aloe Vera do for you @OpryLeigh? I know it can be good for burns and the like. We have it in the garden. I didn’t know you could drink it.

OpryLeigh's avatar

it’s meant to be as good for your insides as it is for the outside. I started using it to aid healthy digestion but I have also heard that it is good for joints.
