If you would be given an ample amount of money and you need to invest it wisely, what kind of business would you choose?

I’d love to own a small movie house that shows nothing but films mainly from the ‘30s and ‘40s.

A wise investment meaning presumably one that could support the business owner very well.

I don’t know about wise, but fun would be a Medieval living history village, that would have functioning inns and houses for rent, and a chapel available for destination weddings, and full contact medieval martial arts tournaments, and working farms and a mill house, and all of it.

The public could visit part of the time, and part of the time would be full immersion into period life for those staying on site.

Ample to me would be enough money not to have to bother with a business. I suppose I’m the “victim” of a successful business.

A book shop

It seems the answers reflect businesses that would be fun or hobbies, but not very lucrative.

A weapons manufacturer selling weapons into crisis territories to all sides of the conflict.
War is good for business.

I have no use for a bunch of money if I’m having no fun.

That’s the eternal dilemma. While it is possible to have fun without money, you are guaranteed to be punished for neglecting to chase after it. On the other hand, if you are successful at acquiring money, the very success usually leads to the means to its acquisition dominating your existence.

I’d invest in a state of the art meth lab.

If I didn’t have to worry about profit, I’d open a bookshop with a cafĂ© attached and have authors reading events.

The other dilemma- turning a profit while enriching the soul or serving the public good? Good luck!

I would have a film production business producing documentaries for PBS.

A fine arts school/studio. It would be a dream to be able to be around artists all day long watching them create their art.

If it didn’t matter how lucrative it was, then I would do something to help homeless and feral cats (and maybe a dog or two).

If I wanted something that could sustain me as far as having an ample income, I don’t know because regular businesses seem to not always flourish. I would love to own a bookstore, but with Amazon and other online purchasing, I don’t think a bookstore would be too profitable. Same with a florist. I think a florist would be a lovely business but it would not survive. I’d love to do something with crafts and sell them, but that’s sold a lot on Etsy and places like that – in person, unless you are in a tourist area, I don’t think it would do too well. So to answer the question, if it were supposed to make me a good living, I have no clue.

Mine would have the benefit of being almost self-sustaining, do even if it didn’t flourish, the infrastructure would remain so if nothing else, my family would always have somewhere to live.

I really just want the farm. All the rest is fun bonus.

What can you say about it?

jamesruesch's avatar

I love all your answers! Me, I want to build something that incorporates what I know and what I like.

I would like to have a giant, clean, well lighted re-sale shop in a prime location.
Think for-profit Goodwill.

@Seek there is a town for sale in S. Dakota for about a quarter M $. It is abandoned. It is small. There was a trailer park, but they hauled the trailers away.

Seek's avatar

Ooh, South Dakota wouldn’t totally suck, either. Sign me up.

Anyone want to donate to Uasal’s Medieval Seitch? I take paypal!

ibstubro's avatar

Yup. A house and a bar is smallish in the “town” department. lol

Seek's avatar

Six acres is small in the “farm” department, too.

Here2_4's avatar

I am betting you could bring the price down a lot. Then you check the adjoining property to see if they will sell off a few acres.
Anyway, there are other towns in the area for sale, or were. It just seemed to me a good fit for your desires.
