Why such an aversion to field homework questions but not fluff?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) December 20th, 2015

Over the years if anyone stated they needed input or help for a homework assignment, they have been told Fluther doesn’t play that. Yet, whole phalanxes of dim, trifling, questions are embraced with open arms. A question dealing with an assignment at least is dealing with something pertinent, and providing an actual use for someone, it would seem that would gain the site a bit more respectability. Why not do helpful question as much, if not more, than the fluff, less this place want to equal a cyber putt, putt, golf course instead of a championship 18-hole course?

Honestly, the impression I get is that most jellies don’t actually know the site’s policy on homework questions.

From Fluther Help

Homework Questions
Feel free to ask for help on your subject, but simply posting your homework question verbatim and expecting an answer is rude! We’re not here to do your homework for you.

Asking homework questions is allowed, but several jellies consistently respond to such questions as if they were against the rules. Now, this isn’t to say that anything goes. Those who ask homework questions are expected to demonstrate that they have already done some independent work on the problem, and responses may be removed if they just give away the answer instead of prompting the asker to work it out. Requesting and providing help, however, are both allowed.

I answer homework questions if the subject is something I’m interested in. So, math or biology rather than history or sociology, for example. I much prefer these to the fluff questions. But I’ll answer the odd fluff question too, if I’m really, really bored.

Imho.
Why, if I may, in the world would anyone here supply answers to someone who either didn’t bother to do the work, (and continues to not do it by allowing answers here to be supplied) or skipped the class mentally or physically? If, as stated above, one can explain their request with giving a sample of their knowledge and being confused or torn over choices, then great! Good thought to bring it here. But if a student has been given a question or 10 as a quiz, test, notebook grade, etc., to use the knowledged gained by classwork, paying attention, deducing the best possible, etc. blows it off, figuring the clueless will give the needed answers, wtf?
Bringing it here even beats having to read an article with a generalization of the needed info that Jr. has to sift through.
Have any honestly bought the latest ploys? A few of my “omg -are you kidding me?” favs:
-I’m writing a screenplay, so tell me, in Les Miserables what character…
First I’ll ask a skanky question then while they all answer, I’ll slip one test question in about Saudi Arabia?
Or
-I am taking a trip. If the train leaves the station….how much is 12 pounds of oranges?

Let the kid do their own work. Because they are letting others do their work- give them what they need, poor sots? The higher the grade level, the more deductive reasoning bolstered by research on fact, opinion and possibly here say, are stressed. I’d let it go if Fluther is cited as a Source.
I guess after all the work for this person has been done- they’ll have more time to devote to cracking the code of the genetics of a wombat- or some other cookies and milk positive for third world countries?
Did the question about Women’s Labias give anyone pause? ( Oh, and while we’re on the subject…about that Saudi Arabia…) I’m serious. Go back and check. I’ll wait.
That’s a kid I’d put in charge of a drug company to raise the price of needed RX so he can buy stupid crap, and call himself God.
I digress. My apologies.
Try this. Instead of spoon-feeding Jr.‘s cheating habits, why not tell Jr. to go look it up. Or try this web site, kid. People on here are excellent at referrals x a million. Lead them to an answer or have them give you their base knowledge before benevolence.
Jr.s grade by cheating skewers the whole baseline for those who didn’t cheat.
I always hope that Jr.s teacher adjusts Jr.s grade accordingly. ( For being a cheat and an a-hole- minus 35 points, you little shit)
They aren’t all sweet, cute little Ferris Bueller. (nor as wealthy!)
Assist, help, fabulous! Not aiding and abetting nor accessory to the fact.
Ok. I’m finished. A-men. Psalm on page 58.

I’m always ok with honest “my homework is x, but I don’t get it. Can you explain steps X1–3 so I understand this concept before the exam?”

I’m never ok with “give me the answer so I can ride on participation credit” questions.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Yes that’s the difference. It’s the spread between “I don’t get it” and “tell me the answer so I can avoid the effort to learn anything then grow up, join the teaparty and vote for Trump”

@stanleybmanly – Quit quoting Putin. Oh, wait. That’s their bromance. Sorry.

@stanleybmanly “It’s the spread between “I don’t get it” and “tell me the answer so I can avoid the effort to learn anything”

Yes, exactly. It is good that students can come to a place like Fluther to ask questions when they’ve been trying and trying and don’t have anyone at home to help make that breakthrough. I wouldn’t deny help to such students.

It’s usually pretty clear which type is asking the question.

If they’re not smart enough to post it as a question as opposed to a quiz, they really need to do the homework.

That said, I, like a number of jellies above, have helped people with homework. I think I’ve even helped a time or two when someone was texting while taking the test. They obviously didn’t ask every question here, so I tried to give them the extra ‘bump’ of one more correct answer.

It depends how the question is phrased. If they want me to do the work for them, I’m not interested in playing. If they have an idea and want people to brainstorm with I think that’s a great thing to do. If they just can’t figure out how to approach a topic, again, no problem.

Do your own damn work and learn from it.

It does you no good for me to do the work and provide you with the answers.

As for fluff, well, if you want to know whether I put the roll on so that it feeds from the bottom or the top, chances are you are wanting to know whether you are normal or not so, sure, I will answer that for you.

I don’t understand the obsession with “fluff”. Is there a definition somewhere or are we talking about the difference between General and Social.

I see the “Why is this boy looking at me funny?” questions and generally roll my eyes and move on.
However, I see that a number of jellies enjoy the “relationship” questions and I don’t begrudge them that.
They don’t interest me, so I don’t go there.
How is that complicated?

Isn’t it past time we redacted something?

Who has an obsession? Here it is as common as mushrooms after a spring shower. As expected as flies at a picnic.

Maybe, I know I could have if I sullied my shoes in this sticky, gooey, sponge candy mess as often as I used to, but I spend time doing more important things as of late. ~~

In no particular order. Just as listed by search for “fluff”.

Oh, this is Fluther, people add things to phrases that wasn’t there, and take stuff out of comments and facts that are there. I am cutting to the chase and letting people know when they wash up on the beach it is a silly, nonsensical question. They won’t have to think too hard or get too serious behind it…..that is why, hope that clears it up.
