What do we know of the life of Muhammad?

I did a Web search and got a bit confused about what we can say for certain. I would like to know what the general consensus is among historians.

I heard that prophet Muhammad married a 6-year-old girl named Ayesha when he was 51. Not sure of which book mentioned it though.
