What is this murder mystery movie I vaguely remember seeing?

Asked by ellbur (92points) December 29th, 2015

Spoiler warning (though I’m not sure of what).

Two men are alone together in a house. At least one is a fiction author (maybe they both are; don’t remember). One man, the older man, lives in the house, and he has many strange artifacts, such as an all-white jigsaw puzzle.

Together the two of them act out scenarios in which the older man kills the younger man. At the end of the movie, the murder actually does take place, though the younger man calls the police ahead of the actual murder.

Does anyone recognize this movie?

Sleuth. Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine.

Yes, Sleuth. Great movie. It was based on a play.

It looks like it was remade in 2007 with Michael Caine playing the role of the older man – interesting.

One of my fave ever films, Olivier was outstanding in it, but the scene where he plays snooker is terribly edited & he nominates each colour before potting when they’re supposed to be taken in sequence as a matter of course.
Just a small issue with an otherwise brilliant movie.

One of my faves. Olivier deserved an Oscar for Best Scene Chewing, as he did many times in his career! If you ever get the chance to see it on stage, don’t miss it. Lots of fun.
