How do I keep deer from eating my plants?

Asked by mrjadkins (1256points) July 24th, 2008

I just moved to a new area and tonight found a herd of deer in my front yard munching on the plants.

Well, once deer season rolls around…

No, that’s not an honest response (I just asked fluther whether or not hunting is ethical the other day). I think I’ve heard of some natural repellents actually, but I don’t know how effective they are or how much you really want to throw it near your garden.

I’ve heard of spraying some sort of fox urine but I don’t know if I want to do that. I wonder if I could use a Supersoaker for that and if I spray it on everything? Strange.

I actually could care less about the plants but I have neighbors and the deer are eating their plants when I said I would “take care of them.” I thought just watering was going to be all I had to do….

I am quite lazy and a great plant killer on my own. Now I have help from the herd! But I think I should do something to stop it.

Have a steak dinner a couple nights in a row, and then go pee around and on any of the plant life you want the deer to avoid. Works like a charm.

I’ve heard of fox urine and human hair.

@poofandmook Now that sounds like a recipe for a really bad cocktail.

@mrjadkins: LOL I know. Probably why the deer stay away!

@chaosrob I ate antelope tonight but can’t bring myself to peeing in front of my neighbors. I am in a condo and we all share the same garden spot entry way to our respective homes. They of course have the large bay window in front.

Maybe I will ask them to take the pee duty. I will spread by hair around. ;)

@mrjadkins What about peeing in a Coke bottle or something and spreading it from that? Best of both worlds, modesty and deterrence.

@chaosrob that’s a good plan. I think I am just going to by a product I saw called Deer Repellant. Its fox urine in its own bottle. Should be fine.

Thanks everyone!

Isn’t this the classic “build or buy” argument all over again? Funny, I wonder if that makes peeing in a Coke bottle “Open Source.”

I sprayed the Deer Repellent today. We’ll see how it goes. I think it was $12 worth of concentrated bear piss. It smelled really bad. At this point, most of the plants are leave-less now so I may have been too late.

But I think it may keep people from knocking on my door. I am tempted to keep a tiny bottle handy to spray on people who annoy me.

An inexpensive fertilizer from Wal Mart called Milorganite. Smells to high heaven. spread it around your gardens about 4 times a summer and it seems to slow them down a lot! The County Extension Service gave me that one.
