Is Iphone 4s still good to use this 2016?

Asked by micchon (391points) January 25th, 2016

Hi, my Asus Zenfone was stolen and I was planning to switch to iOS for a change. I’m about to buy this Iphone 4s (rarely used) that’s sold to me for $80. I’d like to know if you think it’s still good to use now that it’s 2016? Would it be okay for longtime use or temporary? If not, would you recommend me better phones to buy? I use phones like, 60% for communication, 30% for media and 10% for games. Thank you very much!

The 4s has flaws.
Mine has stopped being able to use wifi or Bluetooth. When I called Apple, they said it was a known issue, and would only be fixed if I had a maintenance agreement. I am replacing it next month.

Yes, they still work. Of course a used one may have seen some abuse and might die at some point, but if not, it will probably continue to work for years.

You won’t be able to upgrade the OS. I think the latest version of the OS that works with iPhone 4 is 7.1. And many of the latest apps won’t run on it, but you might not care about those.

I would try not to pay $80 for one, however. Are you in a country where electronics cost more than in the US? Because I bought an iPhone on eBay last July for $45.

My wife still uses an iphone 4, not even a 4s. She refuses to upgrade. Still works fine for being a 3g phone.

If it’s still working, then yes, if it’s broken and not working, then no.

I still have a fourth gen iphone because I lost my job, and it does what I need it to do, make calls, plus the extra features a smartphone has.

If needed you can still use a flip phone, or hell, a nokia 3310, if it’s working.

If the primary usage is for phone calls then yes.

For Internet usage it might start getting bogged down after a year to two.

Heck, I still use my old iPhone 3G for Fluthering and email and that’s just fine.

However , it can’t handle many more complex sites that are graphics heavy etc. It just freezes up and I have to reboot.

I liken it to using a computer with insufficient RAM.

But I agree you can likely do better on price for a phone that old.

Well, I wouldn’t buy an iPhone 4s, but that doesn’t mean it is a bad phone. I’ve never been a fan of Android and never will be, it’s overall just a bad experience.

I think a bit depends on what version of iOS is on it. I know that most iOS updates tend to make older phones work in a way that makes people “need” to upgrade even though they would’ve been perfectly fine with teh older iOS version.

No matter what though, it should still work as a phone if nothing else.

@jerv Plus you can always roll back the OS, granted it’s not exactly advertised by apple, but you can.

@XOIIO And I probably would.

My daughter uses my old 4S. Works fine. It is not updated to iOS 9 because that would slow it down immensely. She does calling, TXT, and e-mail no prob. YouTube and Pandora work fine. Most of her games work fine too.
